Canadians 2023 - Oshawa, ON - January 9-15

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Unfortunately this won't be practical for me to attend with no direct flights to Oshawa. I have a former student who lives there and she said she flies to T.O. and then takes the train to Oshawa. If people live in eastern Ontario they probably have the option to drive there. I will plan to go to Calgary for the World Juniors instead. The time frame for WJ is better for me anyway, and I have quite a few options for flights.

Top Canadian Talents to Compete in Oshawa at the 2023 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships
January 3, 2023/by Skate Canada

OTTAWA, ON (January 3, 2023) – Hundreds of senior and junior athletes from coast to coast to coast will be converging at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre from January 9-15 for the 2023 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. The pre-eminent Canadian figure skating event will feature skaters in the men, women, pair, ice dance and synchronized skating disciplines.

Several national champions will be competing throughout the week, including Beijing 2022 Olympians Madeline Schizas and Keegan Messing. This will mark Messing’s final national championships after a long and successful international career. In pair, Grand Prix de France gold medalists Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps will be looking to earn their first title, while NHK Trophy winners Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen will be vying for the top spot in ice dance. Reigning world champions Les Suprêmes will be some of the top contenders in synchronized skating and will be looking to capture a third consecutive title.

Current ice dance Canadian champions and 2022 ISU Grand Prix Final winners Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier have withdrawn from the event due to Gilles recovering from an appendectomy. Olympian and 2018 national champion Gabrielle Daleman, as well as ice dancers Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer and pair team Lori-Ann Matte and Thierry Ferland will also be unable to compete on account of injuries. All athletes look forward to returning to competition in due course.

In addition to competing for medals, skaters will be vying for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships® 2023, the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships® 2023, the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® 2023, the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships® 2023, and the ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships® 2023.

According to IFS Magazine on Twitter:
Keegan Messing confirmed he will be competing at Canadian nationals. Is hoping his baby arrives before or after nationals. Due date is Jan. 14.
From Bev Smith on Twitter:
Even though Keegan Messing's wife, Lane, is expecting to have their second child Jan. 14, the day of the men's free program at Canadian figure skating nationals, Messing says he will indeed attend, but return home to Alaska immediately afterward, skipping the gala.

In the pre-competition press conference call, Deanna Stellato-Dudek confirmed that she has not yet recovered from the virus that was troubling her at the GPF - it is apparently RSV. She and Maxime plan to compete at Canadians but she will certainly not be at her best :(

Bev Smith has written about the situation: https://bevsmithwrites.com/virus-hobbles-pair-team/

There seem to have been some issues with the CBC Sports Stream today. I have had no problem with the stream on the Skate Canada website: https://skatecanada.ca/2023-canadian-ti ... -streaming

It is hosted by Ted Barton and he was joined by Kevin Reynolds for the Jr Men.

CBC has no commentary.

Kaitlyn Weaver is joining Ted for commentary on the Jr Rhythm Dance. I guess she found her way to the arena. She sent him a text during the Jr Women asking for directions :D She is just back from a tour in Japan.

Everything is being live streamed and available on several websites including The latter two both have the commentary. The CBC feed does not.

CBC Sports has the videos from each of yesterday's events available if you search here: https://www.cbc.ca/player/sports
They are also available on the Skate Canada DailyMotion channel:

There have been a few problems with the Skate Canada/Daily Motion stream this morning but the CBC Sports one seems to "weathered" through it :) And they are using the Skate Canada commentary on the CBC stream too.

Now that the Jr Men have finished, we will have, for the first time ever at Canadians, Synchronized Skating - the Junior SP.

There are 9 teams competing from 4 different sections of Skate Canada - the start order: https://cssterminalserv.skatecanada.ca/ ... oSP2SO.pdf
  • Lower Mainland Junior BC/YK
  • Golding Ice QC
  • ICE Ignite ON
  • Synchronicity ON
  • Solstice Junior AB/NT/NU
  • Nova QC
  • Les Suprêmes QC
  • NEXXICE ON
  • Gold Ice ON
The size of the crowd grew significantly for this part of the competition and was definitely boisterous and loud, something that is usual at Synchro competitions :D

The results after the Jr Synchro SP:
1 NEXXICE ON
2 Nova QC
3 Les Suprêmes QC
