ISU CS Event #7 - Trophy Metropole, Nice, FRA - 16-20 Oct. 2024

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Canadian Skaters to Compete for the Podium at October Challenger Series Events
October 1, 2024/by Skate Canada

OTTAWA, ON (October 1, 2024) – The ISU Challenger Series continues this October with three more events and more opportunities for Canadian figure skaters to perfect their routines while competing for podium positions as they embark on their 2024-2025 season.

The month kicks off with the Denis Ten Memorial taking place in Astana, Kazakhstan from October 2-5 and will feature national team members Aleksa Rakic and Kaiya Ruiter competing in their first event of the season. Ruiter is the reigning Canadian senior women’s champion while Rakic was the runner-up in the men’s competition at the Canadian Championships in 2024. Ruiter will be joined by Uliana Shiryaeva in the women’s discipline, while Lily Hensen and Nathan Lickers and Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer will compete in ice dance.

The Budapest Trophy runs from October 11-13 in Budapest, Hungary and will see Madeline Schizas looking to improve on her seventh-place finish at the Nebelhorn Trophy that took place in September.

The month will wrap-up with the Trophy Metropole taking place in Nice, France from October 16-20 where Canada will send both junior and senior skaters. In the senior competition, Breken Brezden and Fée Ann Landry will compete in the women’s event, while Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont, bronze medallists at the 2023 ISU World Junior Championships, will compete in ice dance.

The junior competition will see Reese Rose and Aleksa Volkova compete in the women’s event and Parker Heiderich compete in the men’s discipline.

The Challenger Series is an International Figure Skating Series designed to give skaters adequate opportunities to compete at the international senior level and to earn precious World Standing Points. I understand that the remaining competitions for today have been postponed due to the severe weather alert (thunderstorms & risk of flooding) in the area. They are expected to be rescheduled to tomorrow.

The weather issues have caused the organizers to make a decision to cancel the remainder of the competition scheduled for today and to award medals based on the SP results. This very unfortunate to any of the skaters who were hoping to get their Combined Technical Scores to qualify for future competitions.

Canada's Reece Rose was awarded the silver medal based on her SP results - she joined Parker for a photo

The Men SP is underway in Nice today: https://www.ffsg.org/resultats/2024-202 ... SEG001.htm

It appears from the live stream that they have permitted fans back into the stands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K9dSuCQ0zo

History was made - Adam SIAO HIM FA successfully completed a back flip as part of his SP without a deduction. The move is now legal but scores no points on its own; it must be done as part of the choreography which is scored as an element of the program.

Practices and competitions were delayed in Nice today - there appeared to be a problem on/with the ice and, as the Women SP is taking place there were 2 cones sitting on the ice!!!

Skate Canada's press release: https://skatecanada.ca/2024/10/canadian ... metropole/
Canadian Skaters Score a Medal in Every Colour from Trophy Metropole
October 20, 2024/by Skate Canada

Nice, FRA (October 20, 2024) – The ISU Challenger Series Trophy Metropole Côte d’Azur wrapped up in Nice, France on Sunday with Canadian junior and senior skaters bringing home one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal, despite having to contend with severe thunderstorms that hampered competition.

The junior competition kicked off the event and saw 18-year-old Parker Heiderich of Calgary, Alta., win gold in the men’s competition in his first international assignment with a total score of 187.86. He placed first in the short program (61.76), and second in the free skate (126.10) and was the last skater to compete before the venue was shut down due to weather concerns on Thursday.

“I feel amazing,” said Heiderich following the competition. “Having the crazy weather, and it being the last performance because of the rain was very nerve wracking, but when I got onto the ice, my head just blanked and I did it. I felt so good about it, and I just wanted to perform it as good as I could because I wanted everyone to enjoy it as the last performance of the day.”

American skaters Lorenzo Elano and Nicholas Brooks took silver and bronze respectively with scores of 186.64 and 179.16.

The venue shut down on Thursday led the event organizers to award the medals for the junior women’s competition based on the results from the short program on Wednesday, leaving Reece Rose of Gananoque, Ont., with a silver medal for her short program score of 59.01. Aleksa Volkova of Lac Brome, Que., finished eighth overall (54.52). Stefania Gladki of France won gold (65.75), while Kira Baranovska of Latvia took bronze (58.95).

The senior competition saw Fée Ann Landry of Gatineau, Que., bring home a bronze from her first senior women’s competition after fighting back from a sixth-place finish in the short program to finishing third in the free for a total score of 169.03.

“I’m really happy (with the medal). The goal was to skate good and have good technical points, so the medal is just an added bonus and it was really fun to be here,” said Landry who skated at this competition last year as a junior and finished fourth. “We really worked on skating skills and being on the ice and feeling it after last season and I think that’s really helped with all of my programs and to have more energy at the end of the program.”

Breken Brezden of Dauphin, Man., was also skating in her first senior international competition and finished 10th (150.54) overall after performing an impressive free skate that moved her up from 20th after the short program. Chaeyeon Kim of Korea won gold (204.67), while Niina Petrokina of Estonia took silver (187.57).

The senior ice dance competition saw Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont of Ajax, Ont., finish seventh overall with a total score of 150.78. Allison Reed and Saulius Ambrulevicius of Lithuania won gold (189.93), Caroline Green and Michael Parsons of the USA took silver (186.47), while Eva Pate and Logan Bye, also of the USA took bronze (180.83).

The next stop on the Challenger Series Circuit is the Nepela Memorial taking place in Bratislava, Slovakia from October 24-26, 2024 but no Canadian skaters are planning to attend.
