Skate Ontario 3Turn3 - news & interviews

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Skate Ontario 3Turn3 - news & interviews

Post by Elizabeth »

PJ Kwong, Charlene Bailey, and Mazin Thomas have been doing weekly live video interviews that have been very enjoyable.

The latest interview, last Friday, was with Kurt Browning and it's well worth a listen:

The weekly 3Turn3 YouTube sessions finished yesterday with a season in review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VVCTeZRVF8

The focus, as usual, was on Skate Ontario athletes and, instead of having a guest/guests, they included some snippets from previous shows, as well as talking about outstanding performances through the year.

The show is expected to return in the Fall. In the meantime, the earlier shows are available on YouTube.

One item that was discussed yesterday, in their "On Thin Ice" segment had to do with the mental health of athletes (as mental health week is next week). The impetus to some of the comments was a post from the group "Figure Skating for Change Canada" on Twitter of a letter sent to Skate Canada and the Minister of Sport for Canada: https://twitter.com/fsforchangecan/stat ... 1050866688
The two page letter:

Because of the timing of the show's broadcast, I don't believe they were aware of Skate Canada's response to this letter: https://skatecanada.ca/2023/04/skate-ca ... en-letter/
Skate Canada Statement regarding Figure Skating for Change Canada’s Open Letter
April 27, 2023/by Skate Canada

Skate Canada is deeply troubled by the allegations made in an open letter regarding a club in our organization (Champs International Skating Centre of BC).

Skate Canada would like to acknowledge the open letter that was posted to Twitter today by Figure Skating for Change Canada, we also received the letter via email. We have had no previous contact with this group and have not received any complaints or any communications regarding the matters listed in the letter.

Skate Canada is committed to providing an environment where everyone can experience the joy of skating in a safe and healthy manner. We take misconduct extremely seriously, and we have a comprehensive process to address allegations of such behaviour.

In accordance with our policies, Skate Canada has referred the allegations listed in the letter to Skate-Safe. All matters related to misconduct at Skate Canada are managed by Skate-Safe, a misconduct reporting system that is operated by IntegrityCounts a third-party service provider. Complaints received through Skate-Safe are submitted to an independent external Case Manager to ensure an independent review, investigation, and disposition.

Skate-Safe will review the information and determine if the matter should be redirected to Abuse-Free Sport and the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner. Complainants can also report directly to Abuse-Free Sport.

Skate Canada recognizes that historically we have not always had the proper policies and processes in place to address misconduct but since the launch of the National Safe Sport Program in 2019 we believe we are equipped to support our community. We know that trust must be earned, and we hope to rebuild that trust with any members who have been negatively impacted.

Our dedication to a safe environment is a top priority and we have responded directly to Figure Skating for Change Canada through email. We have invited them to work in collaboration to achieve our collective goals in making skating a safe environment for everyone.

I'm sure that most people are aware that the idea of abuse in all/many sports (in all forms, not just sexual abuse) is being investigated at many levels.

Figure Skating for Change have now responded to Skate Canada, making it clear that the abuse issues exist across Canada and echoing the requests from many sports groups for a national inquiry.
