ISU GP#3 - Grand Prix de France - Angers, France - 4-6 November 2022

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

A Small but Mighty Canadian Contingent to Compete at Grand Prix de France
October 31, 2022/by Skate Canada

OTTAWA, ON (November 1, 2022) – With the Senior Grand Prix season in full swing, Canadian athletes now head to Angers, France for the third stop on the ISU Grand Prix circuit. A total of seven athletes will be representing the maple leaf in the men’s, pair and ice dance competitions from November 4-6, 2022 at the Grand Prix de France.

First-year senior Wesley Chiu will be competing at his second senior ISU Grand Prix after placing tenth at the 2022 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic and sixth at Skate America earlier this season.

The experienced team of Deanna Stellato Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, whose spectacular program earned them a gold medal at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy, will be aiming for their third medal in the pair competition after claiming silver at Skate America a few weeks ago.

In ice dance, Olympians Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen will be competing at their first ISU Grand Prix of this season after winning gold at the Finlandia Trophy in early October. They will be joined by new National Team members Molly Lanaghan and Dmitre Razgulajevs, who finished just off the podium at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy.

Competition starts on Friday, November 4 with every discipline performing their short program/rhythm dance. All medals will be awarded on Saturday, November 5, as every discipline will perform their free program/free dance. The event concludes on Sunday with the exhibition gala.

Overview of Day 2 of competition (times 5 hours ahead of EDT)
Image

I am watching the Women FS on the ISU YouTube feed and there are sound problems - we don't hear any arena announcements, crowd noise, etc. but do hear the music during the actual programs. There is no commentary from Mark Hanretty either :(
Apparently the ISU stream that was being used by CBC Sports did have sound. Strange technological issues!!
Fortunately the ISU YouTube feed got back to normal during the last skater in the first warm-up group.

Today was Loena's 23rd birthday and Mae-Bernice brought her a cake in the Kiss 'n Cry and led the audience in singing Happy Birthday to her :)

If you were watching the Pairs FS you might have heard Mark Hanretty speculating that Deanna was the oldest winner of a GP medal. He went on to say that "Skating Scores" might be able to validate this.

There was a subsequent exchange on Twitter where the person who is behind Skating Scores indicated that they couldn't do so at that time as they had not put ages/dates of birth in their extensive database. Within a few hours, however, the necessary updates had been done and a query produced confirmation of Mark's speculation. [The information only goes back to the Fall of 2003 when the "new" IJS was introduced.]

Here are tables regarding the ages of Men and Women winning GP events in the post 6.0 era as well:

Note that all of the oldest winners were in Pairs and Ice Dance - regarding the preponderance of pairs, Meagan Duhamel remarked on Twitter
We just do better in this discipline with age
:)

Check out the website of Skating Scores where you find links to very interesting statistics and where you can do your own queries: https://skatingscores.com/
