2022 Olympic Qualifying (and Worlds 2022 qualifying)

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

NOTE - the results of 2021 Worlds will directly determine the spots for 2022 Worlds, in the usual way. The qualifying for 2022 Olympic spots is, in large part, based on 2021 Worlds but some spots in each discipline are being held for Nebelhorn as explained above.

After the completion of the first event at Worlds 2021, as I understand it, in Pairs the following are now qualified for Worlds 2022:
  • 3 spots: Russia & China
  • 2 spots: Canada, USA, Italy & Japan
  • 1 spot: each other country with a pair that meets the TES minimums
However, for the 2022 Olympics there will be a maximum of 19 Pairs spots with 16 assigned based on the Worlds 2021 results and 3 of them left for confirmation at Nebelhorn. According to the complicated rules announced by the ISU, it appears that the following are qualified (from Worlds):
  • 3 spots: Russia
  • 2 spots: China*, Canada, USA, Italy
  • 1 spot: Japan*, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic
* an additional Chinese spot and an additional Japanese spot could be "competed for" at Nebelhorn by a different team than the one(s) who competed in Stockholm; they must be in the top 6 at Nebelhorn to get the spot confirmed, as I understand it.

The Olympic qualifying scenario is very much open to interpretation/awaits a definitive announcement from the ISU.

  • 1 spot: Belgium*, Austria*, Azerbaijan, Canada, Estonia, Sweden, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, China, Czech Republic, Great Brittain, and Finland

Overall, I think our results were good in these very challenging times and in a rebuilding era.

Well, the ISU has finally come out with the definitive information about the Olympic qualifying, post Worlds.

From: https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/news ... teParam=15
The entries for the Beijing 2022 were assigned according to the result of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021 and the designated Qualifying Event Nebelhorn Trophy which will take place on September 22-25, 2021 in Oberstdorf (GER). The full list of entries is available in ISU Communication 2388.

Up to twenty-four entries for Ladies and Men, 16 for Pairs and 19 for Ice Dance were determined according to the results from the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021 following the rules for ISU Championships.

In order to have three spots, two entered Skaters need to achieve a maximum of 13 points. In order to get two entries, the maximum number of points is 28. If there is only one entry, the maximum number of points for two spots is 10 and the maximum number for three spots is 2.

Skaters who are in the Free Skating/Free Dance and are placed 16th and lower count with 16 points. Skaters who did not reach the Free Skating/Free Dance, get 18 points.

However, if an ISU Member has earned the necessary points for three spots or for two spots but did not have three or two Skaters qualified for the Free Skating/Free Dance, the third/second entry is not automatically attributed nor is it reserved for the respective ISU Member. They have the possibly to secure that third/second spot at the Nebelhorn Trophy. All Skaters competing in the Olympic Qualification will have an equal opportunity to earn one of the remaining spots.

If the maximum number of spots available at the World Championships are not filled up by the ISU Members competing in the Free Skating/Free Dance in Stockholm, these remaining places will be added to the ones that are available at the additional Qualifying Event.

Detailed information and the Entries/quota places earned by ISU Members/NOCs according to Rule 400 A., paragraphs 2 and 3 are now available in ISU Communication 2388.
Link to the Communication referenced: https://www.isu.org/inside-isu/isu-comm ... -comp/file

Note that the national teams qualifying for the Olympic Team Event will only be determined after the December 2021 Grand Prix Final
