I think there's only 2 males on this board and a number of women. Am I the one who's going to raise the issue that many feminists think these contests are exploitive of women? I can see how they might be considered that way. I expect Ms Daleman is going into this with eyes wide open. I hope so. I wish her the best in any event.

Hi Fred. I hear ya. I'm not a big fan of such competitions either, but I think they are no longer "beauty pageants" but concentrate on inner qualities as well. I think the "weight issue" bothers me, and as a teacher & aunt I worry that girls get the wrong impression about weight and what is beautiful. I shudder when I read a book and it says a character is "chubby but beautiful". Generally I write "and" over the "but". I know, I'm really bad, haha. I came across this in a Nancy Drew book and I was horrified that this would give girls the wrong message. I think I'm just happy for Gabby as she's been a victim of bullying when the little twerps told her she wasn't beautiful enough to be a figure skater. So, she's getting the last laugh, haha.
I was also bullied in school and sadly, it is always with you when you have been victimized in that way.
