2019/20 ISU Junior Grand Prix - Event #2 - Lake Placid, NY, USA - Aug. 28-31

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

It has been announced that Kseniia Sinitsyna (RUS) will not be competing at JGP Lake Placid this upcoming weekend due to a visa issue. There will be no replacement.

Ice dancers Ekaterina Andreeva & Ivan Desyatov (RUS) have also withdrawn from JGP Lake Placid.

In this photo from this morning's practice, I see that Stephen is there with his California coaching team and that he is changing/maturing.

I was also shocked how grown up he looks now! It must be so hard for the skaters to adjust to body changes as they grow. It seems to be a good coaching arrangement for him.

This morning I watched the rhythm dance event and was reminded of being in Lake Placid 10 years ago for the 2009/10 JGP. I have a clear memory of watching Kharis Ralph & Asher Hill who represented Canada but I can't say that I really remember the other dancers, except perhaps for the Shibutanis from the USA.

It was very interesting, therefore, to go back and look at the protocols for the compulsory dance from that event: http://www.isuresults.com/results/jgpus ... Scores.pdf
Several familiar names from senior competition in the ensuing years - particularly the ice dance team that placed last in the CD!!!!

2009 Lake Placid, last place, rhythm dance. Well, I’m really glad they didn’t quit after that disaster!

From Twitter & based on Anya's Instagram post:
Anya Lavrova/Maxwell Gart have withdrawn from the Free Dance at JGP Figure in Lake Placid due to a concussion suffered during the Rhythm Dance. We wish Anya all the best in her recovery!

The men's event finished with the awarding of medals this evening.

Someone made up two signs placed strategically in the arena to thank Ted Barton and his crew for their JGP live streaming - you can see one of them in the background of the image above. Ted was touched by the action and mentioned it a couple of times in his commentary.

Another example of the offspring of former skaters now competing - from Twitter
Ilia Malinin, with parents (and coaches) Tatiana Malinina & Roman Skorniakov, is thrilled w/ 3rd place in SP & FS, 4th overall. Ilia is perfecting a quad salchow to add to his FS later this season.

Who remembers his mother competing for UZB? She was the 1999 Grand Prix Final champion, the 1999 Four Continents champion, a two-time NHK Trophy champion, and a ten-time Uzbek national champion.

His father also competed for UZB but was not as successful as his wife. You might recall that, after their coach died, Roman and Tatiana took turns coaching each other, standig at the boards at competitions.

Ilia (born in 2004), is the 2016 U.S. juvenile champion, 2017 U.S. intermediate champion, 2019 U.S. novice bronze medalist, and current Team USA figure skater.

Thanks for posting the photo of Tatiana and Roman with their son. Certainly brought back memories.
I would not have recognized either of them. Were I technologically competent, I’d post photos of her I took at Worlds oh so many years ago. She was a favourite, so tiny, so determined and there was something special about her. Always cheered for Roman too.

A 13-year old young lady from India won a lot of admirers in this weekend's competition. She competed in both the singles competition and the ice dance competition. She may have been on the receiving end of the lowest scores but that was really unimportant compared to the experience she gained. She truly was intrepid in light of travelling to the USA, competing twice both Friday and Saturday, and having her efforts live streamed around the world. There was lots of vocal support from the (small) crowd seeing it in person and lots of positive comments from Ted Barton and those watching online and sharing their feelings on message boards.

You could see her joy in skating and her love of moving to music. Here's hoping that resources will be found to enhance her development and that of skating in general in India!

✅ First WOMAN to land a quad lutz AND a triple axel in the same program
