I watched the women's hockey, Canada vs Russia then a whole bunch of team events, and I have to take a break and somehow finish tuning my piano today. [I really want my piano tuned nicely, because it encourages my practicing.

When I come here and log in, I go to the "quick links" and select "Unread Messages" I get a list of what to read, and most times I don't even bother to see what Forum they're in. So it doesn't really matter that much to me. I have noticed that spoilers are few and far between, and as a result, (I think), we are talking more about where & when to watch the skating, but we're not talking about the skates and skaters and how wonderful they are. Of course I don't want to spoil the events for anyone. Did we have a discussion a while back about a separate Forum for Spoilers? Do we want to revisit that issue?

Now that the results of the Team Event are definitely history, with medals awarded, the attention turns to the individual events and the focus is on a broader group of skaters.

Of particular interest to many is Yuzuru Hanyu who has finally arrived in PyeongChang, complete with massive security.

The anticipation was palpable, with an unusually high media turnout for an official practice. As the clock ticked down to 7:05 p.m. local time, when the session was to begin, the air became similar to that of a Muhammad Ali heavyweight title fight back in the day as people waited to watch the champ climb through the ropes and into the ring.

Hanyu went through a light workout for 15 minutes that primarily involved strokes and just a couple of jumps, before departing. He attempted no quads during his time on the ice. He did not appear to be in any distress or favoring any part of his body.

Yuzuru Hanyu has had one very easy practice (mainly stroking) on the practice ice and one full practice on the competition ice. After that he had a press conference with a standing room only crowd. Jackie Wong (RockerSkating) posted his remarks on Twitter as it happened:

Hanyu: It has been 3 mos since I was injured. There were times when I was only able to watch skating and not be able to skate myself. It was very difficult, so I am very grateful I'm here at the Olympic Games. I want to focus and show what I can do.

Hanyu: While I was injured, even after the New Year's, I got a lot of supporting messages. I want to thank everyone for it. I want to let them know that I appreciate every message and they gave me the power to go on

Hanyu: I feel so grateful that so many people are watching me skate. It can be pressure - I want to accept it and turn it into energy. I want to show the people the performance that makes them feel like it was worth the wait

Hanyu: I was training off ice during my injury, so when I came back, I still knew what it was like to jump. I started doing 3A about 3 weeks ago and quads about 2 weeks ago

Hanyu: There are many coaches in our club. I was mainly training with Tracy Wilson and Ghislain Briand [when Brian Orser was here in South Korea]

Hanyu: I don't feel the injury particularly made me stronger. But when I wasn't skating, I did a lot of off-ice training and I thought about a lot of things that I wouldn't have done otherwise. I don't feel like the last two months were a waste

Hanyu: I wasn't thinking about whether or not I could come back; at NHK, I wanted to skate but my ankle wasn't cooperating; after 2 months, there were times when I didn't know I could keep skating. But I can skate now, so that's all that matters.

Hanyu: I'm happy to be here in Korea, and I'm still getting my conditioning up. There are elements that I haven't tried yet. I have a plan, and I want to peak at the right time.

Hanyu: It's hard to say about the quad loop. I have to have a wise strategy - I really believe that I can win with a clean performance. I have many options; what ends up in the program will be determined as I get my conditioning up [in the next few days]

Hanyu: When I came back to training, my biggest concern was stamina and getting back the feeling of the ice. I had some uncertainty, but I'm here and I'm ready for the Olympics. I'm not worrying about too many things now

History was made with the participation of the pairs team from North Korea in the pairs event tonight. With choreography by Julie Marcotte and some coaching from Bruno Marcotte, and with charming personalities, they did not disappoint. They have easily qualified to move on to the free skate.

Looking at the scores, those finishing in positions 3 through 9 are all within less than 3 points. Tonight should be very interesting! In a CBC interview with Paul Martini, it sounded as if Duhamel & Radford are not currently planning on going to Worlds but that just might have been a reference to their final "Olympic" skate. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for pointing that out Elizabeth. I left last night thinking what a gift it was that Duhamel/Radford were sitting in 3rd place after the short with that shaky skate, but what you said makes me realize that it really isn't a gift at all. There are six teams nearly in a dead heat with them for the podium. It seems that first and second are fairly well established, though the order of gold and silver will depend on the free skate for sure. It will definitely be a nail biter!!

What a night of pairs figure skating!!!! One for the history books

Love when skaters achieve what they set out to do. Goals were realistic by all.
Each team had at least one little squiddle goof but so much great work by all.
Sure proves once again that GOOD PROGRAMS carry GOOD RESULTS.
It also showed that reaching your own goal for a performance can be just
as rewarding as a medal.

Does that Mathematical Magical #13 count at the Olympics for determining the number of
entries for next year's Worlds??? Or does that only apply to WORLD's?
How old is the Chinese gal? I remember her from way back at Skate Canada in Kingston years ago.
She couldn't stop smiling.....what a contrast with this program.

No the numbers of competitors for this year's Worlds are based on last year's Worlds - they are the same as they were for the Olympics with 3 in everything but men where we have 2. This year's Worlds results will determine the numbers for next year.

Sui was born in July 1995 & Han in August 1992 - they are still young and have the incentive to win the gold at home in China in 4 years (Beijing 2022). It was a different Chinese couple at SCI in Kingston in 2010 - Dong & Wu. At that time Sui & Han were still competing in Juniors. They were one of two Chinese pairs who competed at SCI in Mississauga in 2011 where they won a silver.

FYI - this is from their ISU biography:

Sui/Han teamed up in 2007 without having previous pair skating experience. They both are inspired by 2010 Olympic Champions Xue Shen/Hongbo Zhao and started skating after watching them competing at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Zhao is now their coach. Sui/Han have landed throw quadruple Salchows and quadruple twists in competition. The couple missed most of the 2012/13 season as Sui was recovering from epiphysitis. They also missed the first half of the 2016/17 season as she underwent surgery on both feet in spring 2016.

It is interesting that so many skaters have returned to at least one previous program, either a short or a free. The choices seem to have been good ones so far.

Last night we saw the first ever quad throw landed at the Olympics - something for the record books.
