Wow, it's early this year I'm assuming because of having it before the Olympics. I'm looking forward to watching skating in January & Feb.!!

Well, I'm signing off until after Christmas. Have a good couple of days everyone! I don't know if anyone is Jewish here and so I say Happy Hanukah to you if so.

The ISU has put up the page for entries, etc. - some decisions about participants will await the conclusion of national championships, e.g. in the USA and Canada.

Thanks. Oh it's too bad Roman isn't on the list to go. I believe both Kevin and Elladj are planning on retiring...at least that's the impression I was given through watching the broadcasts. However, it's a good warm up for Worlds I suppose.

The 4CC participant and alternate lists clearly seem to be based on the results at Canadians, going down the list from those who are assigned to the Olympics. It makes sense that those going to the Olympics would not make a trip to Taipei in the short time-frame involved.

Elladj certainly announced as the season began that this would be his final one. He said rather poignant farewells at the end of Canadians after having a wonderful competition. I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin retired but I don't think it has been announced.

Lubov & Dylan have also said that they will be retiring but I understand that they are planning to go to 4CC. Hopefully Dylan will have further recovered from his unfortunate (non-training) accident that left him with a cut hand. It would be nice to see them have a happier finish for themselves.

We probably won't know until after the Olympics who will decide not to go on to Worlds in Milan, thus clearing the way for an alternate (or 2, or more).

What was the accident? It still looked pretty fresh and painful. It was heartbreaking to watch their dreams crumble the way they did at Canadians. So many people were behind them but it just never fully came together. Let's hope that with the big pressure now off, that they are able to finish their competitive career off on a high at 4CC

The actual accident happened in December, I believe. It was not made public and they did not want it to be used as an excuse, although they lost training time. As I understand it, a heavy glass/mirrored door fell on Dylan - resulting in him being cut in several places, including his hand and his head; there may have been a concussion involved as well. It could have been very serious.

Wow, I didn't know they were retiring!! Well, I guess it makes sense as they are both having trouble with consistency with their jumps. That's really too bad though. Canada will be really stripped next year...talk about starting over, wow.

No Tessa & Scott will be MAJORLY depressing. :? :(

A message from Dylan posted on Instagram from the Toronto International Airport before leaving for 4CC:
It was both an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to chase my Olympic dream for a second time, let alone come close to realizing it. While not making the Olympic team was a heartbreaking defeat, the pain will eventually subside. We fought through some big obstacles, including an accident I had in late December, but never gave up. In the end, the skaters who are going are incredibly deserving and it has been an honour to chase this goal alongside you and on behalf of our great country. In the meantime, I will get up, dust myself off and move forward because it’s in these pivotal moments that character and strength are built. So, now I am off to Taipei, to once again represent my country and have another chance to do what I love. I’d like to say a HUGE thank you for the immense support that I’ve received. It truly means the world to me and I couldn’t be more grateful for your words of encouragement throughout.

Chinese pairs team have withdrawn from 4CC.

From: http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-0 ... 910604.htm
Reigning world champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong and teammates Yu Xiaoyu/Jin Yang have withdrawn from the upcoming Four Continents Figure Skating Championships due to minor injuries that Sui sustained a week ago.

"Sui received a shin skin scratch in training a week ago and Jin has been suffering from recrudescence of old injuries. In order to protect the health of the skaters, the Chinese Figure Skating Association and the national team made the decision," the Chinese Figure Skating Association said in a statement on Saturday.

Sui and Han, who had captured the gold medal at last year's World Championships and finished runners-up at this season's World Grand Prix Finals, were considered medal favorites of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Nine Chinese skaters including men's world championships bronze medal winner Jin Boyang will take part in the men's, women's and ice dance competitions at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, which is slated for Taipei from January 24 to 27, for their final tune-up for the Pyeongchang Games.

With the withdrawal of the Chinese pairs, would I be bold enough to state that Dylan & Lubov should handily walk away from this competition with the title? Fingers crossed. It would add insult to injury if they were not able to finish #1 in this field.

That's dreadful about the accident. How traumatic!! Sorry, I didn't see this explanation before and did now that I was reviewing the thread. It's unfortunate they have to retire, but I remember that years ago he was thinking of retiring, so he's done pretty well!!

Dylan is now 33 years old - I have been following him (and Eric Radford) since he was skating in Junior Men and Junior Pairs. Dylan's early pairs career was with his younger sister, Kyra; they couldn't do international competitions as she was too young and he was too old for juniors. She eventually quit skating due to some health issues. Dylan was paired up with Kirstin Moore-Towers by their coaches. They had quite a bit of success but Kirsten opted to move to a different partner after they won a team silver medal at the 2014 Olympics. Dylan partnered with Lubov within a few months, after a try-out in the USA. He has had a number of injuries over the years, including shoulder problems.

Dylan and Lubov were interviewed earlier this season and made it clear that it was their last year of competition.

CBC Sports had some technical difficulties so we missed seeing the first three dance teams. That has now been corrected. The second warm-up group is on the ice.

Thanks. Is the Men's SP available anywhere? I can't seem to find it. Honestly I don't want to just view Nam's performance as good as it apparently was. It's funny CBC doesn't have a link for that...grr...maybe it's coming.
