I have been resisting going, because my conscience feels like I don't want to contribute financially to something I'm not 100% certain is the truth. I have resisted going to see the film for similar reasons. At the suggestion of a friend who is a minimal follower of skating, however, I went to see the film with her late this morning.

The film is very well acted. To quote a line from Tonya in the movie (hopefully verbatim), however, "everyone has their own truth". It is presented in sort of "vignettes" where the truth is presented from the perspective of the speaker - be it Tonya, Jeff (her once & former husband), Shawn (his friend, a legend in his own mind), or Lavona Harding (Tonya's mother). Needless to say, the various versions of the truth are not in agreement.

Oh no, not that old gag...confusion of what is right and wrong then (from my perspective). I'm glad you went to see it and that you survived.

In the sense of the movie, I don't believe they were referring to right vs wrong but rather the difference between what person A remembered/believed happened vs what person B remembered/believed.

Elizabeth did you come away from the film thinking you *enjoyed* it?
I tried to view it as if I was someone who knew nothing about the *incident*.
I was *pulled in* by the characters.....and I really did ENJOY it. Walked out
thinking that Tonya was just a gal who loved her skating and all the *other things*
that happened to her were out of her control. Please don't think I actually BELIEVE
what I wrote in the previous sentence --- those were the feelings the movie *made
me believe*.
That's why I enjoyed the movie. Something special is captured....not necessarily
the correct *something special*.

Geez, I sound like a psychiatrist....lots of words that are twisted around.

"Lost of words twisted around." Don't worry. I think that's the Tonya Harding experience.
Yet it's true that we are all products of our environment and often have little choice how our personalities are going to come out,... sort of,... maybe? I guess I'm just as confident as you are. There is some choice, though. Maybe we should think about Nancy Kerrigan and what her movie might be like. She could call it, "Why, why, why!"

Carol asked if I "enjoyed" the movie. I would say that I'm glad I saw it.

As I said before, I thought that it was well acted - that goes especially by Allison Janey - she deserves her nominations and awards.

I didn't come away smiling and/or singing the music so no "enjoyment" in that sense

I also didn't think I had wasted my time and money going to see it.

Tonya was never one of my favourite skaters to watch back when she was competing. I felt she was primarily
just a technical skater -- and she certainly didn't have much grace or artistry. As a result I NEVER looked at
her performances again on my tapes or DVD. Other skaters I would watch over and over until I had memorized
their routines etc.
My question is about the music that was used in the film for Tonya's performances.....I don't recall ANY of those
selections at the end. What did she actually use for her Olympic performance? She certainly wasn't "packaged" like
Nancy. Was there a problem getting the rights to the actual music for the film?
I'm hoping my memory is letting me down here, because if the film is to be considered *authentic* then I feel
the original Music should have been used. The skating editing was so well done.....it looked *authentic* enough
to pass for folks that don't follow every sniffle and sneeze like we do on this board....hahahahaha!!

We go to our movies on OLD FOLKS MONDAYs and only pay $6.99 to sit in those gorgeous comfy recliners. Even if
the movie is a dud, the chairs are worth the money!!

I certainly wasn't implying that you did anything wrong - I was just confirming that I was avoiding the issue. If there's a board problem hopefully Fred can fix it.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I'm going to put out a theory on why the music may have been different:

Music in skating is rarely one piece played straight through. The choreographers cut and paste it, as well as mix it with other selections from the work, or with music from completely different artists or genres. I've often wondered how the skating world is able to get away with that kind of distortion of the original. Are they paying copyright fees, or are they using the music for free, because it's not being used for profit?

I wonder if for the film, they could not get appropriate permission from the artists to have their works used in this kind of piecemeal fashion?

Thanks and sorry for over-reacting. I think it was just a fluke. I think I quoted Kevin who had quoted you and something went wrong with the closing HTML tag. Next time I will quote one person at a time, haha.

P.S. It just happened to me again because I had 3 opening HTML codes. I removed two of them and now it's fixed (i.e. I had 3 [quote=Elizabeth...at the top)

I was watching...how'd you like to be that referee?! She made the right choice I think. Debbi Wilkes had said on her show that Tonya did this quite a few times in her career. I can't remember the exact number.

I see in the news that Tonya's dress, that she wore at the Olympics during the 1994 scandal, is up for Auction!
