The movie about Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan is supposed to be in theatres already. It's not here and I don't think it's coming to our city. I saw what is apparently supposed to be a trailer, but it's the worst one ever, so who knows if that's even the real one. Has anyone seen it? I hope that they will have a proper skating consultant so that the skating scenes are more realistic.

The movie was one of those at the Toronto International Film Festival currently going on. It premiered on September 8th but it is not supposed to go into release in the USA until 2018. I haven't seen any dates for Canada. In fact, I understand the deal for US distribution may not yet be finalized.

Well, in my opinion the story should have stayed buried, somehow it doesn't seem to be such a big deal after all these years. And what about all f..... in the review? That turned me off the altogether.

Well I see the trailer on You Tube, and it's rather realistic. This is what went down, but I don't know about the rest of it. It's not the "Tonya - Nancy Story" It's the "Tonya" story. Are they going to make Tonja the heroine of this affair?
I also remember the North American media building this up as a battle between the two of them at the Olympics. Then along came Oksana Baiul, of the Ukraine. I remember the swan done to perfection in the greatest ballet tradition, but on skates. I wonder if they'll include her?

Ohhhh...thanks Elizabeth. I came in the middle of two people talking about it on TV, so I must have missed about it being at the T.O. film festival. Oh no Heini...yeah that would bother me too as I hate constant swearing. Fred you made a good point. She certainly was no hero, but it's hard to know how movies will portray it.

I'm not sure if I'll see this film. I'm not much into black comedies either and it wasn't a laughing matter. We all saw this when it happened and all the hoopla surrounding it. I'm SURE we've all heard the whole story. Also, most of us knew Tanya had a difficult life and we all felt sorry for her background, but not for the choices she made. Wasn't she aware the attack was going to happen? That's what I always understood. I'm not sure a film trying to present her as a person who was the victim is at AT ALL constructive.

It is everyone's choice to see or not to see any film, including this one.

Tonya Harding pleaded guilty March 16, 1994, to conspiring to hinder prosecution and received three years probation. The four others charged served prison sentences.

In July 1994, Harding was stripped of her national title and banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

Thanks for the info. Elizabeth regarding the charges against Tanya. Essentially she kept the secret and knowledge of their involvement in the attack. As for seeing the film, I'll have to see about it IF it comes to my theatre.

As you all may be aware, there have been nominations and awards for some of the actors in this film. You might have even seen Tonya in person at one of the award shows. There have been various articles & TV features, some of which would encourage you to be sympathetic to Tonya Harding. I understand that she is making $$ from the film, since it is "her story".

Today an article was posted in The Oregonian, entitled 'I, Nauseated': The Oregonian's ex-sports columnist nails what the Tonya Harding movie gets wrong. It was written by Julie Vader, who with colleague Abby Haight covered the Tonya Harding story more closely than anyone. I saw the movie last Thurs. afternoon. I was sure I had read/seen everything possible to know about this *incident*.
I was surprised that it was being called a "black comedy".....I couldn't really think of anything *funny* about it.
However, there were moments where I actually laughed out loud.......some of the dialogue is hilarious!

Allison Janey certainly is the centre of this movie......I think that she is a perfect example of a person who
should NEVER have been a Mother. I was surprised to learn that she was actually Tonya's STEP MOTHER. I hope
the movie script didn't overexaggerate what this woman did to Tonya just to prove that she was really the villain.

The only thing I didn't remember from that time was Tonya receiving threatening letters a few weeks before this *incident*.
It was difficult to hear the spoken words in this scene. I'm thinking that Jeff Gillhoey and the other guy (Sean??) sent this
threatening letter to Tonya in order to prove that she was getting threats too....in order to take the suspicion off them
when Nancy was targeted a few weeks later.

If I remember correctly the music played for Tonya's skating programs was NOT what she actually used. Perhaps they
had difficulty getting Royalty rites.
I would recommend the movie for sure for ANYONE that follows skating. The skating is extremely well edited.

Actually I don't think it's ever proper to sacrifice facts for an artistic performance, (maybe there's an instance that I haven't considered), but there is no way changing facts to justify a criminal attack on an innocent person, like Nancy Kerrigan.
I always have a little mental chuckle at how the press billedthe whole event as a face-off between the two of these "megastars," and Oksana Baul came in with a balletic routine that easily took the gold. A friend asked me to go to this tomorrow, but I have declined. Apparently it has 130 uses of the F word as well as Christ's name a number of times. I just can't endure that type of profanity and feel it's a time of verbal assault for those of us who are sensitive to such things. It's unfortunate they couldn't tell the story without going overboard in that area. A few swears are fine, but not that much. Ok, "realism" I suppose, but who cares. When in a movie it takes away from the storyline for me. As for real life, I tend not to hang out with people who swear that much!

I guess I'm going to see I Tonya today. It's not out of some desire to see the movie, but a friend is giving me a ride to Halifax and she wants to see it. I can get to my bicycle store and get the new shifter I want, and maybe a set of fenders.
So I'll go and see for myself what this movie is.
Spring is coming, people. How far away can it be?!

I have been resisting going, because my conscience feels like I don't want to contribute financially to something I'm not 100% certain is the truth. I'm also struggling with the fact that the release was clearly timed to capitalize on the public interest in the upcoming Olympics, and I hate to be manipulated!

So....I will probably wait it out, and watch the movie when it makes it to TV.

Unfortunately my friend emailed me a little later and she wasn't feeling well, so she didn't go. I don't mind missing the movie, but I wish I had my bicycle working so I could get some exercise for my legs and get more blood circulating. With the diabetes, it's important. She says the next time she goes, She'll let me know.

As for Spring it's -30 with a -39 wind-chill today. I'm not a happy camper. Even my nose hasn't been out of the house. I walk by the door and I get this freezing draft...drafty old house that I can't afford to insulate. There's a famous quote that goes as follows: "We are closer to Spring than we were in September, a little bird said in the dark of December."
