Rob McCall's mother Evelyn has died at the age of 85

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Rob McCall's mother Evelyn has died at the age of 85

Post by Elizabeth »

Evelyn McCall was a skater and coach and became well-known as the mother of Rob. Rob died on 15 November 1991 and Evelyn died in hospital yesterday. Her other son, Steve, was with her at the time of her death and posted the news on her Facebook page. The comments and messages in response have been from those whom she taught to skate, with whom she skated, and many who have become well-known in the field of skating, coaching, and the media.

May she rest in peace.

A tribute from Steve McCall to his mother (posted on her Facebook page):
"My mom was an extraordinary woman by any measure. She gave me and my late brother Bobby so much. She taught us to live with curiosity and bring light to people through art and our highest expression. She reminded us always to be kind because pain and suffering are easy to find and hard to shake off. She was the OG liberated woman in the 1960s. An athletic enigma. She joined the ice capades right out of high school and saw the world as a showgirl. She raised my brother and I on her own working full time at the IWK hospital and teaching seemingly every person I have ever met how to power skate for hockey or figure skate from Dartmouth to Liverpool every weekend and evenings. She used the money she made on weekends to support us to be anything we wanted to be! I was the black sheep of the family but Mom always defended my long hair and overly loud guitars. When I graduated from high school she bought me the custom made for me guitar that I still play to this day.

She was an icon for people living with AIDS through the nineties and was a driving force in raising millions of dollars to help find the drugs that allow people to live through it today. She was never quite the same after my brother died. I guess none of us were. In many ways it made her investigate her spirituality in a way the church never gave her. My mom held my hand from the day I was born and I got to hold hers as she faded away. Her eyes filled with a light I had not seen in her before. A simple acceptance that seemed impossible to hold seemed to descend upon her.

She was a powerful force in life for so many least of all Stevie and Bobby McCall

In my minds eye I can see her gliding gracefully on God’s eternal sheet of ice hand n hand with Bobby now

With gratitude for my mother
Evelyn Lexina McCall
January 1, 1936- Nov 3, 2021"

I remember Rob at the Calgary Olympics and how inventive he was with his blades. Yes, mother & son reunited on heavenly ice, strong and full of energy once more. Blessings, indeed.
