Kiss 'n Cry and Skaters Entrance (still in progress)
In the Kiss 'n CryWhat a champ Loucas Ethier is for skating the way he did just now in pair SP. He's been suffering with strep throat that almost canned the trip to #WorldFigure early in the week. He coughed when he got off ice. He and Kelly Ann Laurin almost equalled their SB with 62.30. Wow.
Showing disappointmentLia: “Of course, the mistake on the throw was very unfortunate. That set us back a little bit, so we left some points on the table. Nevertheless, we are proud of what we did today and pleased with all the other elements.”
She also mentioned that the uplifting music for their short program helps them get in the right mood for competition:
“We’re very cheerful people, and it really suits us well. This music helps us get into the right mindset.”
Trennt: “Winning the medal at 4CC gave us of course more confidence. I always knew though we were capable of results like this. Also, now I know that we still have a good chance to move up in the free skate tomorrow.”
Deanna: “Everything was kind of a bit off today. Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. We were kind of hoping that we could carry the momentum of the great Free Skate at Four Continents into today. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Our preparation was actually very good. We felt very good and confident throughout the preparation and also here at the event, so this was definitely nothing to be expected.”
“Something that was a little bit nerve-wracking today was that I forgot my costume in the hotel and just got it very last minute. A lot of people helped me to get it to me in time. I was almost ready to go out there in my training gear, but I was very glad that the costume arrived in time.”
“I feel pretty good. Of course, I would have loved to land the triple-triple combination, but yeah, that didn’t go completely as planned. I couldn’t totally pull it off, but other than that, I’m very pleased.
I could really feel the pressure on my shoulder. It was kind of a similar situation to the qualifier four years ago at Nebelhorn. It’s like you’re not only doing it for yourself, but also for the team. So yeah, it’s definitely a lot of pressure, and I’m very glad to have qualified the Olympic spot here.
I am already in the process of selecting my programs for next season, but of course, I will not reveal it yet. It’s also kind of an issue this year with the copyright thing; it got a lot stricter, so I have to go through some processes with that. But I’m very excited for what is to come, and I’m myself curious how it will turn out.
My most memorable Olympic performance, I guess, is Yuzuru Hanyu’s Seimei. I’m very blessed that I was able to see it live a couple of times. That was definitely very inspiring.”
Deanna & Max in the Mixed ZoneTrennt: “We feel a little bit up and down right now. I’m a bit disappointed about the mistakes I made, but at the same time, I’m really proud of Lia. So, it’s a mix of emotions for sure.”
Lia: “We really enjoyed the crowd here. There were a lot of Canadian flags in the audience, and we truly felt the support.”
As for their next plans, Lia shared that she will be going on a girls’ trip to New York with Alicia and Marjorie from the Canadian ice dance team, while Trennt will be heading to Charlotte. “So we’ll both get a little vacation before diving into new choreography,” Lia said.
They already have some ideas for their new programs, but nothing is set in stone yet.
Reflecting on the season, Lia said, “We, of course, learned so much this year. You learn from your wins, and you also learn from your losses. Every competition is experience gained, and that’s something we really enjoy, growing from every opportunity we have.”
They are also really looking forward to participate in “Stars on Ice” for the first time this spring.
Deanna: “Yesterday was really kind of disappointing, today felt much better. It was a good bounce back. I’m a little bit disappointed about the toeloop. I haven’t missed one in two years, so that’s kind of upsetting. We were told that this season, going into everything as defending champions, would be difficult, but now we actually know what it means. A person who’s been in figure skating for more than 50 years told us that it’s probably a good thing to give that burden of being the defending world champion going into the Olympic season to someone else.
Now I’m really hungry for next season. I feel like I am better at attacking.”
Interview with Devin Heroux of CBC SportsPaul: “Today, Elvis was in the building.“
Alicia : “At the very beginning of the season, after we picked our RD dance, Paul said, ‘Wouldn’t that be fun to skate it in Boston?’ Back then, it seemed so far away. Of course, it was always the dream and the goal to get here. Actually being here feels amazing. We’ve been training both programs very hard since Four Continents. Our goals are definitely to make the free skate and score a personal best on the long. We are definitely still nervous and going to keep checking if we’ll be able to relax once the Q is standing. We really enjoyed our skate out there today and we feel pretty good about it.“
Interview with Devin Heroux of CBC SportsZach: “Today was good. It was actually a little bit of fun, so that’s good.”
Asked what made the difference, since competition is usually never fun for him, he said, “Well, after the twizzles, after the first elements, you get more relaxed, more into it, and you can actually enjoy it more.”
Zach: “Well, the last weeks have been very tiring. It’s been a long season in the locker rooms. Everyone is just so tired and exhausted, so but we, of course, went for the last final push, and yeah, we’re happy that we did our job well today.”
Marjorie: “Yeah, it’s been a long season, considering the last two haven’t been full seasons. So yeah, we’re definitely a little tired, but ready for that last push.”
Paul: “We have actually fun memories from our last worlds nine years ago here. Today was really fun with the crowd and overall we had just so much fun. We really drilled this program to the max in training, so we felt really prepared.”
Piper: “Everything in training went really well recently. We felt really prepared and confident for this event.”
Paul: “Remembering the last worlds in Boston in 2016, that was our first time we were in the last group in the free dance. That was a milestone in our career. Now, of course, there’s much more expectations. We’re aiming for medals. But thinking back at the time, what aspirations we had and realizing we’ve reached these aspirations now is really an honor.”
Madeline Schizas shines in the women’s free program, earning a season's best total score of 190.79 to finish 11th overall at #WorldFigure - a career-best result!
Based on her finish at Worlds, Maddie moved up to #15 on the ISU World Standings list“I’m okay. I fought today. Training’s been going very well, and I am proud of myself. Of course, missing out on the top ten so closely, by placing 11th, is a little bit frustrating right now. The level is incredibly high here. Of all my other world championships that I participated in, the score I did today would have been enough for the top ten, but that’s something that is out of my control.”
“I am so looking forward to the world team trophy. I love competing in a team. I loved competing in Japan. And it also should be a good preparation for the Olympic team event.”

Alysa Liu comes out of retirement and delivers the USA’s first Women’s World Title in 19 years — and what a night it was at a sold-out TD Garden!
From the cheers of 19,600 fans to millions watching around the world, this was figure skating at its absolute finest: excitement, drama, beauty.
Gilles & PoirierMarjorie: “I have mixed feelings right now. I was so emotional and happy when we finished the skate because the performance felt really good. But then the score came up, and it was definitely lower than we expected. The placement also didn’t match our expectations, so we really need to go back and review the video.”
Zach: “All I feel right now is that I really want to go back to work. I want to improve everything, our skating skills, our connection with each other, and technically, just everything. I really just want to get back to training.”
Marjorie is excited about her upcoming girls’ trip to New York with Alicia Fabbri and Lia Pereira. “I’m so excited to spend some holiday and off-time in New York with those two,” she said, “and then, of course, go back to work.”
"Silver Selfie" with Devin Heroux of CBC Sports"We're just so proud of what we accomplished here and we're excited to take this momemtum into the Olympic season."
“I was super nervous for this event. Lots of expectations, mostly on myself. I had expectations building up. After the short program, it felt like a huge weight lifted. I put my game face on. Deniss Vasiljevs skated before me and had a loud crowd and a standing ovation. Probably you can guess what he did - he had a good skate. I used that as fuel, as energy and the crowd really welcomed me. They were excited to watch and I was excited to perform. After having struggles the past couple of seasons, it was great to put together two good programs. I was definitely trying to aim a little bit higher in this event. Overall I think this proves that the training has been strong, and lots of improvements over the last couple of years handling pressure.”
