ISU Skating Awards - 11 Feb. 2024

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

How the heck did Surya Bonaly get into this panel of "real" figure skaters?

Well she is a three-time World silver medalist, a five-time European champion, the 1991 World Junior Champion, and a nine-time French national champion. She continues to coach in Las Vegas and does seminars in various parts of the world. It's not all about that Olympic backflip

I didn't watch the show live as it started shortly before I was off to early morning church and brunch with a friend.

I have now watched the full 3 hr. show, co-hosted by Kurt Browning, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPeSZ3pL5Qk
Kurt was the winner of the first Lifetime Achievement Award. This year is the 4th year of the show but the first one that was fully live - the first two were only digital and last year was a hybrid one.

It is well worth watching although, like many shows with live musicians, I would be happy with a few less shots of them and a few more of the skaters - I'm sure the musicians' agents wouldn't agree

The initial selections were voted on by fans around the world, media, etc. and then the list was narrowed down to the top 3 by the 2024 ISU Skating Awards Selection Commission. The winners in each category were decided through a vote by the 2024 ISU Skating Awards star-studded Jury, made up of six former Figure Skating Champions:
Miki Ando (JPN)
Brian Boitano USA)
Surya Bonaly (FRA)
Lu Chen (CHN)
Laura Lepisto (FIN)
Andrew Poje (CAN)

Special Achievement Award: Honors a Single Skater or Pair or Ice Dance Couple who makes history by successfully performing a new / special / unique element or move or achieves something extraordinary at an ISU Event in 2023 (GP 2022 accepted) and pushes the boundaries of the sport.

A selection by the "jury" - Lifetime Achievement winner Brian Orser. The legendary Canadian skater is a 2-time Olympic silver medallist. He then used his experience to guide Yuna Kim and Yuzuru Hanyu to Olympic golds. Image
