2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games - Gangwon, South Korea - Jan. 27-Feb. 1

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Eight young figure skaters announced to Team Canada’s Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Team
December 5, 2023/by Skate Canada

OTTAWA (December 5, 2023) – Skate Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have announced Canada’s figure skating team selected to compete at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

The Team Canada figure skating team for the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games is:

Ice Dance
Audra Gans (Prévost, Que.) and Michael Boutsan (Prévost, Que.)
Caroline Kravets (Kitchener, Ont.) and Jacob Stark (Kitchener, Ont.)

Men’s Singles
David Li (Richmond, B.C.)

Pairs
Annika Behnke (Peace River, Alta.) and Kole Sauve (Grand Prairie, Alta.)

Women’s Singles
Kaiya Ruiter (Calgary, Alta.)

The athletes were selected based on their performances at various junior international competitions in 2023 and the age requirement for these Games.

National Team member Kaiya Ruiter brings the most international experience to the figure skating team. The 2023 Canadian National Skating Championships silver medallist competed at her first senior ISU Grand Prix event in late October. Most recently, she finished second at the 2023 Autumn Classic International competition in Montreal. In March 2023, the 17-year-old had the opportunity to compete at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in her hometown of Calgary where she skated to a top-10 finish.

“I feel honoured and beyond excited to be named to Canada’s Youth Olympic Games Team,” said Ruiter. “My dream, and what drives my training, is to represent Canada on the grandest stages in figure skating. With this opportunity, I get to compete on the same ice where my idol, Kaetlyn Osmond, won two Olympic medals. I am so proud, and I will do my best for myself, my family and Canada. Thank you to everyone who has supported me to make this dream come true.”

David Li, a recipient of the Canadian Olympic Foundation’s Toller Cranston Award in 2022, kicked off his international competition season with a silver medal in the junior men’s event at the 2023 Cranberry Cup. He proceeded to compete at two ISU Junior Grand Prix events where he finished in the top-10 at both. In 2022, the 15-year-old won a gold medal at his first-ever international overseas event — the Egna Spring Trophy in Italy — where he competed in the novice men’s event.

“Being named to the team and having the opportunity to compete in the Youth Olympic Games is an immense honour and a culmination of years of hard work, dedication and passion for my sport,” said Li. “This represents not only a personal achievement but also a chance to represent my country at a very high level of sport. The prospect of participating in the Youth Olympic Games fills me with excitement and gratitude, as it provides a unique platform to connect with athletes from around the world and share experiences.”

Each of Team Canada’s ice dance teams competed at an ISU Junior Grand Prix event this fall, gaining valuable experience that will serve them well in Gangwon. Fifteen-year-old Audra Gans and 14-year-old Michael Boutsan, who train at the Ice Academy of Montreal, made their ISU Junior Grand Prix debut at the Solidarity Cup in Gdansk, Poland, and are excited to perform their free dance to music composed by three-time Olympic medallist Eric Radford in Gangwon. Long-time partners Caroline Kravets, 15, and Jacob Stark, 17, who have skated together for more than five years, made their ISU Junior Grand Prix debut in Budapest this past September. The team trains at the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club.

The pairs team of Annika Behnke and Kole Sauve, who train in Sherwood Park, Alta., made their international debut at the 2023 Trophée Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur. They were also bronze medallists at the 2023 Novice Canadian Championships.

“Skate Canada is pleased to send a young talented team with a range of experience to the Winter Youth Olympic Games,” said André Bourgeois, NextGen Director for Skate Canada. “Canada will be sending one of the larger figure skating teams to the Games and we are excited to see our young skaters compete on the international stage while gaining valuable experience.”

Figure skating will take place January 27 to February 1 (Days 8 to 13) at the Gangneung Ice Arena — the same venue that was used for figure skating at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The final medal event of Gangwon 2024 will be the figure skating team event, which will make its Youth Olympic Games debut. The mixed NOC figure skating team event was on all previous editions of the Winter Youth Olympic Games sport program, but has been replaced for Gangwon 2024 to more closely resemble the figure skating team event format at the Olympic Winter Games.

Team Canada figure skaters have won two medals at the Winter Youth Olympic Games, both in the mixed NOC team event. To date, Team Canada has converted three Youth Olympic figure skaters into Olympians – Marjorie Lajoie, Zachary Lagha, and Roman Sadovsky, who all competed at the Lillehammer 2016 edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games and became Olympians at Beijing 2022.

“Congratulations to the athletes named to Canada’s figure skating team at the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games,” said Lisa Weagle, Team Canada’s Gangwon 2024 Chef de Mission. “Their talent and dedication reflect the bright future of figure skating in Canada. Their performances will not only showcase their individual skills but also inspire others to chase their dreams. As Chef de Mission, I am incredibly proud to support them on this remarkable journey and I wish them every success as they shine on the Youth Olympic Games stage.”

Team Canada’s figure skating alternate athletes, coaches and support staff for the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games are:

Alternate Athletes
Auréa Cinçon-Debout (Montreal, Que.) and Earl Jesse Celestino (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que.) – Ice Dance Alternates

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) are the world’s largest multi-sport event for high-performance young athletes aged 15-18. Gangwon 2024 will begin on January 19 and will end on February 1, 2024 and will feature 1900 athletes. Gangwon 2024 will be the fourth edition of the Winter YOG and the first in Asia. It will have a fully gender-balanced sporting program, and will feature seven sports, 15 disciplines, and a total of 81 events.

Prior to being named to Team Canada, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Team Selection Committee following its receipt of nominations by all National Sport Organisations.

An article on Kaiya featuring her first coach, Darlene Joseph of the Gloucester Figure Skating Club: https://ottawasportspages.ca/2024/01/17 ... -champion/

Although it talks a lot about Canadians, I'm putting it here because it also mentions the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), her next competition.

It also mentions that she'll be competing at Junior Worlds and that it's unlikely she'll skate at Worlds - what it doesn't mention is that she doesn't yet have the minimum TES required for Worlds and it can't be earned at YOG.

Pairs Gold for Behnke and Sauve at 2024 Youth Olympic Games
January 29, 2024/by Skate Canada

Gangwon, South Korea (January 29, 2024) – Annika Behnke and Kole Sauve made Canadian figure skating history on Monday at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea as they won Canada’s first-ever gold medal, and first-ever individual event medal at a Youth Olympic Games.

Behnke from Peace River, Alta., and Sauve of Grand Prairie, Alta., led throughout the competition, scoring a 39.09 for their short program on Saturday where despite falling on the element, they were the only team to attempt a throw triple loop.

Behnke had a small stumble at the very beginning of their free skate on Monday, but the pair recovered swiftly and performed flawlessly from then on to dominate the competition and score a 74.54 giving them a total score of 113.63. This was well ahead of the silver-medal winning team from the USA – Cayla Smith and Jared McPike (98.00), and the bronze medal team from Spain – Caroline Shan Campillo and Pau Vilella (94.03).

“It feels amazing, I’m really happy. I want to thank all my coaches who have helped me get this far,” said Behnke who together with Sauve were competing in front of their largest crowd ever at the Gangneung Ice Arena – scene of so much success for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

When asked how they recovered after their stumble today, Sauve added: “We just took it one element at a time. After that happened and we got the twist done, we forgot about it. It’s a lot easier to have another person there with you, so they can bring you back up after a mistake.”

In the men’s singles competition, David Li from Richmond, B.C., skated a personal best free skate (118.57) to move up from 11th after the short program to finish 10th overall with a total score of 175.73.

“I think the free program, some of the jumps were a little bit shaky, but I’m happy to pull it out and I’m still working on my mental ability to correct things in the program,” said Li who was the junior men’s silver medallist at the 2024 Canadian National Skating Championships last month in Calgary.

Hyungyeom Kim from Korea thrilled his home country crowd to win the gold (216.73) while Adam Hagara from Slovakia took the silver (216.23), and Yanhao Li from New Zealand the bronze (208.84).

The ice dance and women’s singles competitions will wrap up on Tuesday with their free skates, and the team competition will conclude the figure skating competition at the Youth Olympic Games on Thursday.

Kaiya Ruiter of Canada had a disappointing free skate with one fall and a number of downgrades on her jumps and fell from 6th after the SP to 12th overall. This was rather ironic after she had been profiled in an Olympic story: https://t.co/ZZ06L28NkZ

Two Top-10 Finishes for Canadian Ice Dancers at Youth Olympic Games
January 30, 2024/by Skate Canada

Gangwon, South Korea (January 30, 2024) – Canadian skaters wrapped up the individual competition portion of the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea on Tuesday with two top-10 finishes in ice dance, and an 11th place for Kaiya Ruiter in women’s singles.

Audra Gans and Michael Boutsan from Prévost, Que., had the top Canadian finish of the day with a fifth-place in the ice dance competition. Their free skate, performed to music composed by three-time Olympic medallist Eric Radford, scored an 83.83 – a huge new personal best score for the team, giving them a new personal best total score of 136.82.

“This felt amazing. I felt really good on the ice, and everything went smoothly, and I really trusted my skating,” said Gans who made her ISU Junior Grand Prix debut earlier this season in Poland with Boutsan.

“I felt the elements were clean, and I felt it was a good skate and I felt I was able to perform a little bit and I hope the crowd and the judges saw that,” added Boutsan.

The second Canadian ice dance team of Caroline Kravets and Jacob Stark of Kitchener, Ont., set a new personal short program score of 47.98 on Sunday, and finished the competition in 9th position after scoring a 67.72 for the free skate (total score 115.70).

“This felt a lot more comfortable than the first day, it felt more like what we do at home, so it was really good to put out a performance that we’re happy with,” said Stark. “This competition has really taught us to reach for the stars. We weren’t expecting to be here at the beginning of the season – we felt like we were a long shot, but we made it happen and so this has taught us that we can achieve anything we want, as long as we work hard and train for it.”

Newly-minted Canadian senior women’s champion Kaiya Ruiter of Calgary, Alta., had a tougher skate today in her free program, finishing the competition in 11th position with a total score of 154.95. She had entered the day in sixth position after a fantastic short program, which saw her skating in the final group with the top skaters, but with one fall today, and some other jumps under-rotated, she wasn’t able to retain her top-10 position.

“There were certainly some highlights that I’m really proud of, and it wasn’t what I was hoping for, but I really enjoyed the experience and getting to compete on that Youth Olympic ice,” said Ruiter who cited skating in the last group as a real highlight of her time at the Games. “That was such a win for me. Getting to be part of that group of the most incredible girls in this skating world, was just incredible, and was an experience that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.”

The 2024 Youth Olympic Games figure skating competition will conclude on Thursday with the team competition where Canadian skaters will look to capture their first medal in this first edition of a non-mixed nations team competition.

Practices are underway for the Team event - it will involve 5 countries but only 2 of them (CAN & USA) will have representation in all 4 disciplines.

The countries, in alphabetical order, are Canada, China, France, Korea and the USA.

The participants will only perform a free program.

Competition begins late this evening Eastern Time, putting it into "conflict" with the 4CCs event for those who would like to watch the streaming of both :)
