ISU GP #5 - Espoo, FIN - Nov. 17-19, 2023

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

And one from the Women's event

Kimmy Repond’s withdrawal is due to an injury she sustained at Nebelhorn Trophy earlier this season. She’s taking a break from training to heal, and plans to be back for Europeans and Worlds.

Junhwah Cha and Vladimir Litvintsev have withdrawn from this event.

Junhwan Cha’s withdrawal is due to an ankle injury he’s had since before the start of the season, the injury worsened after Skate Canada. He is concentrating on recovery, but will resume training for the domestic Ranking Competition soon.

Canadian Ice Dance and Pair Skaters to Compete at Grand Prix Espoo
November 13, 2023/by Skate Canada

OTTAWA, ON (November 13, 2023) – After a great start to the season that has seen Canadian athletes win numerous medals on the ISU Grand Prix circuit, the competition continues this weekend in Espoo, Finland for the Grand Prix Espoo. From November 17-19, 2023, six skaters across the pair and ice dance disciplines will be competing for a spot on the podium and a chance to qualify for the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

Canadian Champions and Grand Prix de France silver medalists Laurence Fournier-Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen will be among the favorites in the ice dance event after a breakthrough 2022-2023 season that saw the duo win medals at both of their Grand Prix assignments.

Joining them will be Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont, who will be making their senior Grand Prix debut after winning the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final last year and finishing third at the 2023 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

National pair silver medalists Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar also have big goals for the season after claiming their first Grand Prix medal last year at the NHK Trophy. The pair most recently placed sixth at 2023 Skate Canada International.

The competition will kick off on Friday, November 17 with both the pair and ice dance disciplines performing their short program/rhythm dance. All medals will be awarded following the free programs/free dance on Saturday, November 18. The event concludes on Sunday with the exhibition gala.

Wow - it is unusual to see replacements named so close to the beginning of the competition but the two spots in the Men's event have been filled. Ivan Shmuratko was scheduled to compete at the Warsaw Cup but is going to be in Espoo instead.

Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin 🇩🇪 took a surprise win in the Grand Prix Espoo pairs event and are scheduled to compete again at the NHK Trophy next week. The Chinese pair missed the podium by 0.03 points, in part because they failed to do a combo, aiming for a clean skate instead.

During the warm-up for the first group in the Free Dance, the Referee called everyone over to warm them to be careful!!! I've never seen that before! It was after a near collision between two teams (HUN & GER, I believe).
