ISU World Junior Championships - Debrecen, HUN - Feb. 25 – Mar. 2, 2025

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Skate Canada press release about the team competing in Hungary: https://skatecanada.ca/2025/02/24/junio ... n-hungary/
Junior Canadian Figure Skaters Ready to Take on the World in Hungary

OTTAWA, ON (February 24, 2025) – All eyes will be on Debrecen, Hungary as fourteen of Canada’s top junior skaters are set to compete in the 2025 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Taking place from February 25 to March 2, Canadian NextGen athletes will compete in men’s, women’s, pairs and ice dance as they seek the coveted title of World Champion.

Headlining the Canadian delegation will be Ava Kemp and Yohnatan Elizarov, who enter the competition as the second-ranked junior pairs team in the world. The duo has made an impressive comeback since returning from injury earlier this season, winning gold at three consecutive competitions. Joining them in the pairs event will be 2024 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final bronze medalists Jazmine Desrochers and Kieran Thrasher, and national silver medalists Martina Ariano Kent and Charly Laliberté-Laurent.

After narrowly missing out on the podium at the Championships last year, ice dance team Chloe Nguyen and Brendan Giang will look to bring home a medal from Hungary. Bronze medalists at the 2024 ISU Junior Grand Prix in China, Nguyen and Giang also captured their first national title last month. Rounding out the ice dance event will be national silver medalists Sandrine Gauthier and Quentin Thieren, who claimed silver at the 2024 ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland.

In the men’s event, Anthony Paradis will enter the competition in strong standing after capturing the senior men’s silver medal at both the 2024-2025 Skate Canada Challenge and the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships. He will skate alongside the junior men’s national champion David Bondar, who will be making his World Junior Championships debut in Hungary.

In the women’s competition, 2024 national champion Lulu Lin will look to make a powerful return to the ice after battling an injury earlier this season. She will be joined by first-time World Junior Championships competitor Kara Yun, who captured the senior women’s bronze medal at the 2024-2025 Skate Canada Challenge.

Anthony Paradis sits in 14th place after the SP but he ranked 4th in PCS.

His comments from the mixed zone:
Anthony Paradis 🇨🇦 68.37

“I’m feeling good. I think right ahead of the flip, excitement got to me a little bit… I was too excited, and technique failed me at this point, but I’m really feeling very good. I’m less nervous than last year. It’s been a long, hard season, a lot of practice, so it’s been hard to get here, but it was my goal to get here, and I’m feeling good, and I’m excited to show my free skate. About the beginning pose, I always like starting yo perform ahead of the program, This year we did it a bit more with the costume which I think is nice.”

David Bondar was the first Canadian to skate in the Jr Men SP. With a score of 61.73 he qualified for the FS, finishing 22nd.

Mixed zone comments:
Chloe: “Actually, we were so happy that they changed the age rule and that we had another year in juniors to gain more experience. Last year at Junior Worlds, we hadn’t even been skating together for a year, so now we definitely feel much more ready to move up to seniors next season.”

Brendan: “There were a few mistakes today that were a bit unfortunate, but overall, we’re happy and just want to enjoy the experience here.”

Chloe: “At the end of the season, everyone, of course, always feels a little bit tired. Nevertheless, our preparation was good.”

Skate Canada press release on Day 1: https://skatecanada.ca/2025/02/26/canad ... thm-dance/
Canadian Ice Dancers in the Top 10 After the Rhythm Dance

DEBRECEN, HUNGARY (February 26, 2025) – On the first day of the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, both Canadian ice dancing duos delivered strong performances. Sandrine Gauthier (Saint-Constant, Quebec) and Quentin Thieren (Montreal, Quebec) are currently eighth after the rhythm dance, while Chloe Nguyen and Brendan Giang (Burnaby, British Columbia) are in ninth place.

Gauthier and Thieren, seventh at the ISU 2023 World Junior Championships, ended the day with a score of 58.37. The team from Quebec said they were satisfied with their performance, even though they were hoping for the judges to be more generous.

“We are very happy with what we did on the ice today,” Gauthier shared. “The goal was to have fun and gain experience. We can say it’s mission accomplished. We have no control over the marks the judges will give us, so we focus on what we can control.”

As for Nguyen and Giang, reigning Canadian junior champions, they scored 57.46 to finish just behind their compatriots. The British Columbians were able to set aside the pressure and stress to deliver a performance that lived up to their expectations.

“We are quite proud of our performance,” said Giang. “There are obviously a few sequences where we could have done a little better, but that’s part of the sport. All the same, we are happy with our day.”

The top 20 teams after the rhythm dance will be back in action on Thursday to present their free dance.

In the men’s event, Anthony Paradis (Boisbriand, Quebec) achieved the best Canadian result of the day for the short program, finishing the session in 14th place with 68.37 points. Paradis, silver medallist at the last Senior National Championships, secured his ticket to the free program despite a slight error that left him wanting more.

“I feel really great, even though I’m a little disappointed that I lost my footing during my routine,” indicated Paradis. “I’ve worked very hard and I’ve been very consistent in training. I’m glad I made it to the free program despite the mistake. My first two jumps were excellent. Maybe I got too excited afterwards and that’s why I fell.”

Not far behind, David Bondar (Richmond Hill, Ontario) also secured his place in the free program. He finished 22nd (61.73 points). This is the first time the Ontarian is participating at the ISU World Junior Championships.

The men’s free program is on Friday, while the women’s short program will be presented on Thursday, in addition to the free dance.

In the Jr Women SP tomorrow Canada will be represented by Kara Yun & Lulu Lin. Skate Ontario has posted links to stories about each of them.

Mixed zone comments from CDN teams
Image Image Image
Sandrine Gauthier / Quentin Thieren 🇨🇦 92.37 / 150.74

Sandrine: “Today was really fun. It felt great skating out there, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a little bit sad to say goodbye to this free dance because I really loved it.”

Quentin: “Yeah, it was really nice, especially because we had family watching. Performing in front of them made it even more special.”

“We really enjoy programs where we have a clear storyline, where we can perform and act as characters. We also really loved our Pirates of the Caribbean program two years ago. This kind of program is something we really thrive in. We haven’t yet decided on next year’s programs, but these kinds of themes definitely suit us.”

Now, they’re excited to cheer for the rest of Team Canada, pairs, women, and men. After the competition, Sandrine has exams and studying to focus on, while Quentin plans to take a week of vacation. Then, they’ll shift their focus to preparing for their next season which will be in Seniors.
Image Image Image
Chloe Nguyen / Brendan Giang 🇨🇦 88.81 / 146.27

Chloe: “We felt good out there today.”

Brendan: “Yeah, the scores were lower than we were hoping for, but that’s out of our control.”

Their coach came during their intervirw to show them their levels, which were quite low. When asked about it being crazy that even the coaches are surprised about the levels Brendan commented: “It really depends on the panel and what they see. The panel looks at things from a different angle than the coaches, so it’s always hard to predict the outcome.”

Now, both of them have university exams coming up. After that, they might travel a bit, visit family, and then fully focus on preparing for their first senior season.
+++++++++++++

The results here will produce multiple Ice Dance spots at 2026 Jr Worlds for the following countries:

🇺🇸 USA - 3 spots
🇮🇹 Italy - 2 spots
🇩🇪 Germany - 2 spots
🇺🇦 Ukraine - 2 spots
🇫🇷 France - 2 spots
🇨🇦 Canada - 2 spots

Skate Canada press release on Day 2: https://skatecanada.ca/2025/02/27/two-t ... pionships/
Two Top 10 Finishes for Canadian Ice Dancers at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships

DEBRECEN, HUNGARY (February 27, 2025) – Sandrine Gauthier of Saint-Constant, QC, and Quentin Thieren of Montreal, QC, earned Canada’s top result of the day at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships, placing eighth in the final ice dance standings on Thursday in Debrecen, Hungary. Their teammates, Chloe Nguyen and Brendan Giang, both of Burnaby, B.C., finished just behind with a solid ninth place.

The Canadian duo, who was ranked eighth after the rhythm dance, earned the seventh best score in the free dance to finish the event with a total of 150.74.

“We think we delivered two solid routines yesterday and today,” said Thieren. “We are really proud and happy with our performances, even if we made slight mistakes here and there. We have learned a lot this year; we didn’t necessarily have a target score in mind for the World Championships, the important thing was to skate to the best of our abilities.”

National champions Chloe Nguyen and Brendan Giang received a score of 88.81, which placed them in ninth with a cumulative score of 146.27.

“It’s a great way to end the season,” said Nguyen following the competition. “We are very proud of the way we skated and we believe we are now ready for what’s to come at the senior level. The competition was extremely tough here at the World Championships and we just wanted to skate as we expected.”

In the women’s event, Lulu Lin of Oakville, ON, punched her ticket for the free program by placing 22nd in the short program. The 15-year-old skater, who has been recovering from an injury which occurred earlier this season, scored 53.97 points for her routine. The top 24 skaters in the short program will skate the free program on Saturday.

“I wanted to stay calm while being confident during my routine,” Lin said. “I’ve worked very hard in the last few months to get here. It wasn’t so bad today. Overall, I’d say it went well.”

Kara Yun of Vancouver, B.C., placed 28th with a score of 52.91, which was unfortunately not enough to advance to Saturday’s competition.

The ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships continue on Friday with the pairs short program, as well as the men’s free program.

Ava Kemp / Yohnatan Elizarov 🇨🇦 50.20

Yohnatan: “Actually, I felt really good about today’s performance. I felt very confident today about tge elements, maybe too confident, and then the lift just slipped away from me. That was unfortunate, but overall, we are really well prepared.”

Ava: “I had some injury problems over the summer and couldn’t skate for quite a while. Yohnatan skated on his own. We restarted skating again in autumn, and actually, it’s been going well since then. We had a couple of really good competitions and we felt ready and prepared. We felt ready and had some good competitions going into this.”
Image Image
Jazmine Desrochers / Kieran Thrasher 🇨🇦 55.05

Kieran: “There were some things we were proud of today and definitely some mistakes that we would have wanted to do better. Overall, we still managed to get a good score, which showed that the judges probably liked what they saw. They liked this program. Also, we are proud of our twist, it felt like the best one we did all week. And we got the highest program components score we’ve received all season, so that’s definitely something to be proud of. The whole field is very close right now, and we’re in the mix, so we’re happy about that.”

On the unusual schedule for pairs, Jazmine said: “It feels very weird. All of our teammates are already done, and we’re still competing. Actually, I don’t like it that much, I prefer our usual schedule.”

Told that the arena is supposed to be sold out tomorrow she said: “That’s very exciting and we are looking forward!”
Image Image
Martina Ariano Kent / Charly Laliberte Laurent 🇨🇦 55.81

Martina: “Today felt amazing. It was a really good skate, and we feel much better prepared compared to last Junior Worlds.”

Charly: “Yeah, we reached our goal for the short program. We think we couldn’t have done any better, and it feels really good.”

On their absence for the first half of the season, Charly explained: “In the summer, I had an operation on my shoulder. I couldn’t skate for five months because of that.”

Martina: “I trained on my own, practiced my jumps, and even competed in one local competition in singles. It’s not that I considered going back to singles, I like pairs much more, but it was just to keep myself going and motivated.”

They are very happy that they could compete in the second half of the season. Martina: “We did three competitions back-to-back, but we’re very glad to be here.”

Martina: “Our goal was maybe to get into the last warm-up, but we know it’s a very competitive competition. We did what we could today, and the rest is out of our control. We are very happy.”

Solid Free Skate by David Bondar 🇨🇦 including two 3As - 128.56 / 190.29
“I didn’t feel the best out there because actually my ankle was hurting a lot during this competition. Also, one of my boots is just three days old. But regarding these circumstances, I feel really good about what I did today. The mistake on the lutz was unfortunate. I usually always land them. The triple Axel is actually a jump that I really like. It’s one of my favorite jumps.”

“I’m working on the quad toe and quad salchow and I hope to put them into the program for next season. Now, I plan to take a little break and then go back to training. I will also have a new freeskate next season.”

“It feels sad to let my Pirates of the Caribbean program go, that I’ve had for two seasons. I’m a big fan of the movie and I like all the characters. In my freeskate, I was portraying Captain Jack Sparrow.”
Image Image
Anthony Paradis 🇨🇦 122.21 / 190.58

“Actually, I’m sadder right now than I thought I would be letting this program go. It really meant a lot to me, and it will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve had some great memories with it.

It was a success today that I went for the triple Axel, it was the first time I actually rotated it in competition. I’ve tried before, but I always popped it, so that was a little victory. Overall, I’m a bit disappointed. It wasn’t my best day today.

I’ll take a little vacation now, maybe one or two weeks off, I have to talk with my coach about it, and then I’ll really work on that triple Axel and get ready for the new season.

I have a lot of notes about programs I want to skate to, and I’ve already picked one for my free skate next season. It’s a genre I’ve never skated to before, so I’m really excited about it. I also have someone in mind for choreography, but nothing is set yet. Still, I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

On the shirt on the bear he got thrown onto the ice from his dad is a picture of his grandparents. It was a nice surprise for him.

A tribute to those from SCOB lost in that horrific Washington, DC mid-air collision from Patrick Blackwell (who trains there) - he held up the banner in the Kiss 'n Cry and the Mixed Zone :(

Two Canadian Pairs Teams Among the Top Five in the ISU World Junior Championships After the Short Program

DEBRECEN, HUNGARY (February 28, 2025) – Friday at the ISU World Junior Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, Martina Ariano Kent (Montreal, Quebec) and Charly Laliberté Laurent (Boucherville, Quebec) delivered the fourth best short program of the day in pairs.

The pair who finished fifth at the World Juniors last year scored 55.81 points. Georgians Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Beruluva, reigning world junior champions, are provisionally in the lead with a score of 69.18. Ukrainians Sofiia Holichenko and Artem Darenskyi (57.40) and Chinese Jiaxuan Zhang and Yihang Huang (57.38) are slightly ahead of the Canadians before the free program.

“We feel good about this short program! We gave it our all. Our training has been going really well lately and I’m happy with what we’ve been able to accomplish,” said Ariano Kent.

Jazmine Desrochers (Mississauga, Ontario) and Kieran Thrasher (Amherstburg, Ontario) follow in fifth place provisionally, at 55.05, while Ava Kemp (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Yohnatan Elizarov (Winnipeg, Manitoba) are 10th (50.20).

Earlier at the Fonix Arena, Anthony Paradis (Boisbriand, Quebec) finished 16th in the men’s event at his second ISU World Junior Championships. Paradis, the 2025 national senior silver medalist, received a score of 122.21 on Friday, good for a total of 190.58. Japan’s Rio Nakata was crowned junior world champion with a cumulative score of 248.99. South Korean Minkyu Seo (241.45) and Slovak Adam Hagara (233.93) completed the podium.

“I’m a little disappointed, I was doing better during training, but in general, I’m still happy with what I’ve done,” shared Paradis.“I’ve worked very hard all season to get this far. Even though I’m not satisfied, I’m happy to be here.”

David Bondar (Richmond Hill, Ontario) finished 17th, after earning 128.56 points for his free program and a total of 190.29.

The free program events for pairs and women will take place on Saturday at the ISU World Junior Championships.

Martina Ariano Kent / Charly Laliberte Laurent 🇨🇦 99.21 / 155.02
after they became Junior World Medalists 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Charly: “Oh my god, I cannot believe this right now. This is a dream come true.”

Martina: “It already felt so great being in the last warm-up. It felt so good being with the “big guns”. We were repeating among our team ahead of the performance the same key points over and over again, and we think that really helped us today.”

Charly: “Like, during my rehab, the first six months, I really thought I would never be coming back to the ice. But now I’m here. I feel like this episode only made us stronger and made this result today possible. We are super happy.”

Ava Kemp / Yohnatan Elizarov 🇨🇦 95.17 / 145.37

Yohnatan: “It was really good to be out there again and compete at the world stage with all these competitors.”

Ava: “Well, we’re obviously disappointed with the mistakes because we’ve been training so well.”

Yohnatan: “Yeah, competition is just something else. We can’t explain it right now, but I guess it’s just competition.”

On next season, Yohnatan said, “We haven’t made our minds up totally yet, but we’ll probably compete senior nationally and maybe junior internationally since next year we’ll be age-eligible for seniors but also still for juniors. We just got these programs, so we might keep them, but also, it hasn’t been decided yet.”

Jazmine Desrochers / Kieran Thrasher 🇨🇦 92.30 / 147.35

Jazmine: “Yeah, we were obviously a little disappointed. Not necessarily about the results, but we came here to set new personal bests.”

Kieran: “Yeah, training at home has been going so well, so it’s really a little frustrating right now.”

Jazmine: “Now we’ll have to go back to work for the new season. We still have to plan everything. Yeah, we still have to make some plans, and we haven’t yet decided if we will stay junior or move up to senior.”
