ISU 2022 World Championships, Montpellier, FRA - 21-27 March 2022

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Note that Donovan Carrillo withdrew - more on that story: https://t.co/erNN9hpOqW

If you tune in to watch the live stream today, you might notice a different commentator. Ted Barton is doing the commentary today :)

There were quite a number of negative comments about Simon Reed and Nicky Slater who were in the arena doing the commentary yesterday and it appears that the ISU has taken action, perhaps after a complaint from the CBC as noted on Twitter!

Ted Barton was a very nice surprise this morning and he is much easier on the ears at 5:30 a.m. I didn't care for the other announcers either. What a shame about Donovan having to withdraw! :|

The detailed time schedule for the Rhythm Dance which began at 6 a.m. EDT:

The top 20 couples go through to the Free Dance.

The Ukrainian ice dancers performed an incredibly poignant & heart breaking RD, specially prepared in a very short time frame for this event - there was not a dry eye in the house (certainly not in mine)

Comments to the media:

Although they qualified, understandably, due to their lack of training, etc. they have withdrawn from the Free Dance tomorrow.

In tomorrow's free dance, 12 of the 20 teams train under the coaches at Ice Academy of Montreal (I.AM)! (Only their team that represents New Zealand failed to qualify for the FD.)

Today starts with the free skate for the Men - sadly Junwha CHA is a last minute withdrawal. As reported in the Korean press,
Cha tried 4 pairs of boots right after the olympics, but came here with the old pair with a patch sawed over his right boot. However, the top most hook fell down after arrival. They also amended that part, but Cha and Orser finally decided that it is not safe to compete with this boot.

Worlds is over for another year but the TV coverage is not yet over - CBC coverage is going on this afternoon with NBC coverage this evening and more CBC coverage tomorrow.

I have to say that this was an excellent "post-Olympics" World Championships - there were many personal best scores achieved and redemptive skates after what has been a very long and challenging season. You could tell that having "fans in the seats" made quite a difference for many of the skaters.

It was an emotional event - partly because of the situation for the Ukrainian skaters, but also for some of the skaters who are planning to call an end to their competitive careers.

For many of those viewing the events, the skating was more enjoyable without the presence of the "quad queens" and the behaviour of those who stood on the podiums was very uplifting and enjoyable to see.

I am posting

the program

for

tomorrow's

Exhibition Gala

it contains

some spoilers

so I'm leaving

Those involved with the Montpellier Worlds put a lot of effort into making lots of video available including a whole series of "Behind the Scenes" videos, day by day:

Day 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOMOn1i ... 4X&index=4

Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5KjSfI ... 4X&index=3

Day 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeua4HN ... 4X&index=2

Day 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7sIWR6 ... 4X&index=1

They have also made individual skates available for rewatching, for example: The playlist of interviews: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... svewDY92n7

The playlist of small medal ceremonies and press conferences: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... px3DXwLY_X

This strange, troubled season is coming to an end. In spite of everything from Covid and cheating to pestilence and war we enjoyed some special skating moments for which I’m greatful.

I’m writing this mainly to convey my deep gratitude to Elizabeth for all the information she has gathered throughout the season and has so freely shared with us. THANK YOU ELIZABETH. πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’

You are quite welcome, Judy. I seek out information for myself and am happy to share it with others who might have an interest :)

This season will be a bit longer than most - we still have the Junior Worlds and the World Synchro championships to come. For the senior skaters, I'm sure many of them will be happy to have some time off!
