2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships - 2-8 March - Tallinn, EST

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

As posted elsewhere, given the results at senior Nationals and at 4CCs, Skate Canada has yet to confirm the two ladies entries for either Worlds or Junior Worlds. Emily Bausback & Madeline Schizas have been entered in the senior discipline at the Challenge Cup which finishes on February 23rd and on that date Skate Canada will announce the final selections.

According to a Russian article, in light of the Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the ISU will be screening participants in the World Juniors on arrival/at accreditation as they did at 4CCs.

If you are watching the live stream from junior worlds, you are hearing commentary by Ted Barton of the BC Section of Skate Canada. In response to viewer questions submitted via Twitter/e-mail, Ted has revealed a few things about his personal history, for example:
  • he was born in New Zealand and moved to Canada at a young age;
  • he moved to figure skating after first trying hockey;
  • he was a competitive figure skater at the national and international level;
  • he competed in the 1976 World Championships in Sweden (placing 16th) - that was Toller Cranston's final Worlds;
  • he coached figure skating;
  • he was involved in the development of the current international judging system;
  • he was involved, on the production end, of the first efforts of the ISU to provide video streams and got into commentary "out of necessity"; he said he was horrible in his first efforts;
  • he promoted the idea, to the ISU, of the broadcasting of the junior level skating internationally in order to increase interest in and knowledge of skating around the world

Reminder - Schedule/Entries/Results are here: http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1920/wjc2020/

Entries for next year are based on the number of skaters from a country participating and their results/placement points:
  • 1 skater - placement in the top 2 = 3 spots for next year
  • 1 skater - placement in the top 10 = 2 spots for next year
  • 2 skaters - 13 placement points or less = 2 spots for next year
  • 2 skaters - 28 placement points or less = 3 spots for next year
Points are equal to the placement for places 1 through 16; places 17 through 24 = 16 points; places 25 & lower = 18 points.

If a country has a third skater/couple participating, only the results of the top two are given placement points.

In theory, each member federation is entitled to 1 entry per discipline but they must meet the required TES minimums in both SP and FS to qualify to participate in ISU championship events.
