ISU GP - Rostelecom Cup 2017 - Oct. 20-22

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

It could definitely be a "battle of the quads" between Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen at Rostelecom Cup, according to their planned program content! Any predictions on the outcome?

I am not predicting anything, but I like Nathan's style, so it will be interesting.

I'm on the central time zone at the moment so don't think I'll manage to watch it so early, but well you never know, lol. Thank you for all the information.

Men's SP on CBC http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winte ... 5109443695

HMMM - Nam had 4th highest TES and 2nd lowest PCS in the SP - what does he need to do to improve that 2nd mark?

Up next - the short dance: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winte ... 5037251896

At 11:30 ET, the pairs short: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winte ... 5038275752

At 1 p.m. ET, the ladies SP: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winte ... -1.4355267 - I was actually watching it on a continuation of the pairs stream (see link above) for the first few skaters but now it's on its own stream.

The main page for the linked live streams/video as well as news items is: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/figureskating

Presumably as part of their ongoing effort to be more "fan friendly", the ISU has posted summaries of each of today's events on their "News" page:

I'm looking forward to the free skates today. I do feel that our Canadians have been grievously underscored so far this season. In particular, Seguin/Bilodeau, and Gilles/Poirier should have been much higher in the standings after the short. Piper's disbelieving face in the Kiss & Cry said it all! Is that just my Canadian bias showing? While not at this event, I thought Illiucheskina/Moscovitch received scores at Finlandia that were FAR below what they achieved last season, for programs that were far more technically sound. So far I have been puzzled by many of the results I have seen, and I hope this is not a trend that continues throughout the Olympic season.

I too have felt that the PCS marks were low for several of our skaters. Piper's comment after the SD:
A score’s a score, but it was sure fun performing for our fans in Russia!! On to the freedance!!
And today:
It’s a good thing I love to skate.......
To which Meagan replied:
You guys were great. You can't control the rest. Enjoy your journey!

I'm not surprised that the marks are low. This is an Olympic Year and very powerful governments are working up plans for their medal count. When the same thing happens at the Olympics, they'll be able to point at the marks all through the G.P. series and say that the Canadian skaters performed poorly all along this year, and a number of commentators will refer to the Olympic "Jinx" for Canada and everybody will forget it.
Except for the few of us with "national biases" and hyper active senses of fair play.
Like they say. If you're not going to raise a stink about it, enjoy the skating. Bad judging is what's killing the sport, however, because it's turning people away from figure skating. Want to know who's doing it? Look at the skaters who are getting medals. It's not the skaters, but rather their countries that have mastered the art of cheating. "Know the tree by the fruit which it bears."

Yes, this is grim :( I am still reeling from the free dance result. Piper & Paul had an absolutely outstanding program and skate, with so many innovative and interesting positions and lifts. To see it so unrewarded was painful. It's their best work to date!

I haven't finished all the pairs free skates yet, but what the hell?? Marks of 133 for Stolbova/Klimov for missing BOTH throws and going down on the triple toe? Sorry IJS, that was NOT a second place free skate!! Again - Seguin/Bilodeau TOTALLY undermarked for their beautifully skated program. This does not bode well, and the looks of complete surprise on the faces of the skaters and coaches alike, lets us know that they know something is afoot......

Don't forget that the GP results factor into the Olympic team event, i.e. which 10 countries get to compete.

That's what I was thinking all along - that this is a bid to discredit the strength of the Canadian team

I think Judge #7 (from BLR) needs a reminder of how to apply the PCS scores...

Wow! I'm going to look at the other detailed protocols now and see how they look. From what I saw of the basic scores on screen though, it was looking to me that the PCS was what seems to be being used to crush a skater this season. It's wide open to interpretation.

That was my feeling as well, Kevin, while watching live. That & some "levels" in the GOE that may have been questionable.

Carol Lane's reaction was palpable on the CBC broadcast, even though you couldn't see her. Comments like, "We have to remember, this is Russia", told me that despite the new system, the same bias is still present in the skating world. I do wonder how this could be though, since it was not an exclusively Russian panel at Rostelecom.

For anyone on Instagram, there is a great account called "Skatingprotocol" where an individual posts the scores/judges in chart form from controversial decisions, and points out the inconsistencies and errors in a clear way for us. There is one up from the men's FS at Rostelecom and I will try my best to include the link to it:
