ISU 2019 Junior Worlds - 4-10 March - Zagreb, CRO

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Danielle Earl's time conversion for World Juniors FYI

[Since the clocks "Spring forward" overnight on March 9th-10th, I think the Toronto time for the Gala should be 10 a.m.]

The Entries/Start Orders/Results page is now available: http://www.isuresults.com/results/seaso ... /index.htm

The Russian Figure Skating Federation has released a statement confirming Alena Kostornaia's withdrawal from World Juniors due to medical reasons. She will be replaced by Kseniia Sinitsyna as seen on the current entries list. You might remember that Alena won the gold at the JGPF in Vancouver.

A well skated short program by the junior men - just over 5 points separates the top 10 men!

The top 3 junior men after the SP
Image

From Jackie Wong (on the junior men):
With everyone doing 3A 3Lz3T/Lo 3F in the SP, top 12 is separated by 7.52pts - expect the free skate on Friday to completely blow that apart, potential for lots of movement

Excellent rhythm dance by Lajoie and Lagha to take the top spot this morning :) Their team-mates Fabbri & Ayer also performed very well.

In the pairs free skate, one of our teams finished well enough to be in the top ten overall while the Russians swept the medals at Junior Worlds for the fourth time (1985, 1986, 2018 and 2019).

That 10th place gives Canada 2 pairs entries for next year :)

The gold medal winners were in the same position at the Junior GPF in Vancouver.

After the marathon of 46 ladies short programs, the top 24 skaters qualify to skate their free program. The lone Canadian entry ended up in 16th place while there was a virtual tie between the top 2 Russians.

Lots of red, white & blue in the flags of the top 5

Sadly, the Croatian skater who was first to skate just missed qualifying (only due to her PCS); her technical content was better than many junior ladies we've seen in the past.

Stephen had a few problems but still was third in the free skate and 5th overall. He will have a "small medal" for his free skate performance. At age 14 he is 5 years younger than the winner.

There was a lot of movement in the placements between the short and the free:

With the results for the Canadian men we are now guaranteed one spot at each of the 7 JGP events for 2019-2020 and 2 spots at Junior Worlds 2020.

USA, RUS & ITA are guaranteed 2 spots at each of the 7 JGP events - if they are unable to use them, Canada is first in line to claim the unused spots. I suspect ITA doesn't have enough "talent" to use all their spots.

These Worlds were the last junior events for the gold & silver medalists - they have "aged out".

I was noticing this...I mean wow, the silver medalist is turning 20 next month! I thought Stephen did well and thought it was unfortunate he wiped out on that freak accident with the 3 axel. It seems he did not injure his knee, but wow it sure looked like it. A medal was not out of his reach although the winners were much older than him. I think next year will be his year.

Speaking of Stephen Gogolev, I bought the IFS magazine most recent issue a couple of days ago and there's a beautiful picture & article re. Stephen.
"At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more, When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death, And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.” (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis)

Awoke at 5am so watched the last two flights of dance and glad I did. Amazing skating from all of them. No angst about twizzles for this generation!

Haven't watched the others except for a few of the men. Very impressed with Gogelov's ability to leave mistakes behind. He would have realized with the missed quad lutz that the gold was out of reach. Such maturity for a 14 year old skater.
Hope his knee is alright after that axel.

From Bev Smith on Twitter - Apparently Stephen "scratched his thigh" with his blade in the fall and he says it seems fine.

With her top 10 finish Alison Schumacher earned Canada's first top 10 finish in junior women's event in 5 years (Alaine Chartrand, 5th, 2014) and earned us 2 spots for 2020 Worlds and one spot on each of the 7 JGP events :)

For the USA, it’s the first time since Gracie Gold in 2012 that a US lady has won a medal at World Juniors. Congratulations to Ting Cui.

Alexandra Trusova captured her second World Junior Ladies title - just the second lady in history to claim two consecutive crowns. The other one was Elena Radionova in 2013 & 2014. [Adam Rippon is the only man to have done it - in 2008 & 2009.]

Image

Both the gold & silver medal winners here will be 15 years old in time to compete as seniors internationally next season. They placed 1-2 (Shcherbakova-Trusova) at Russian Senior Nationals this season.
