More on the new Cirque du Soleil project

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

More on the new Cirque du Soleil project

Post by Elizabeth »

Back in May news came out about a new Cirque show on ice called Crystal and that Shawn Sawyer would be one of the skaters. Here's the original press release that I posted to the board back then: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/press ... ystal.aspx

Today, they revealed that Kurt Browning has been hard at work as the Senior Skating Performances Designer alongside Ben Agosto as the Skating Performances Designer and Marilyn Langlois as the Synchronized Skating Designer for the show.

Check out the first ever interview with the creative team behind Cirque Du Soleil Crystal! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xM8GfVX_3Q

And here's a CTV Montreal interview with Kurt: http://montreal.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1206949

Tickets now on sale but there are no Canadian locations on their ticket site yet: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/crystal

From what I've seen today, they are planning shows in Quebec City and Montreal in this first round (in December) - tickets are not yet on sale but should be soon.

I haven't seem ramps since they did "The Planets" on Television. (Remember when every top skater would give us a TV special. Kurt, "Singing in the Rain," and Brian O.'s "Night Moves." etc. Didn't Toller do "Strawberry Fields?"
Those were wonderful times. It would put skating back in the public eye again and people would start showing an interest, till they got back into bad judging again. They have to fix that too,.

The Cirque Crystal site has added quite a few new cities, but without dates. They include Quebec City, Montreal and Windsor, ON as well as several in the USA.

I recommend that you keep checking: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/crystal

The show has now debuted - some reviews

Post by Elizabeth »

A detailed and very positve review from Louisiana, after the show opened: http://www.katc.com/story/36537142/revi ... -cajundome
An extract:
Crystal is without a doubt a masterpiece, a beautiful combination of acrobatics and skating that is accentuated perfectly by a cast of disciplined performers. Their love of the art and the performance shows with each executed element and the thunderous applause, joyful laughs, and stifled gasps that pulse throughout the arena during the show proves the audience loves it too.

That part about acrobats learning to become figure skaters and skaters learning acrobatics, reminds me a little of "Battle of the Blades" where hockey players try to become figure skaters. From the brief video I saw, this was not great skating, but I suspect much of the show is better than what was on that video. I'm not sure what I base that on, but it's just a feeling I have.

Here's an interesting interview with Kurt Browning with the focus on his work in the development of Cirque's Crystal show: http://absoluteskating.com/index.php?ca ... ng-crystal

Toward the end he talks about his own skating.
