I'm OK, but...

Yeah I've been in hospital again. This time with appendicitis. I started feeling the pain all over my abdomen on Wed, around supper time. I thought it was an upset stomach. I had peppermint tea. No effect. I lay down & it got worse. I thought it might be food poisoning, because it ached the same way. and then I tried an Oreganol pill. No effect. Along about 11:45 I thought I'd call the 811 line and ask a nurse, but I got run around on a telephone tree and while this was going on the started shaking. I remembered from somewhere, that this was not a good sign and decided to drop the 811 cal and went directly to 911. I threw up just a little before I got into the ambulance. After X-Rays, blood tests showing high white cell count, and a couple of CAT Scans, they could say for sure it was Appendicitis. I had them out fairly quickly, & laparoscopically. Then the recovery took a little longer that usual as they wanted to give me more antibiotics.
I got out yesterday. and I'm putting my Internet life back together. Everyone is being very supportive and I've had some good food to eat.

Glad you are now in a supportive recovery mode, Fred!!

Most people don't hang onto their appendix for that long....

Glad you mastered just another set-back and are recovering just in time for Spring to roll around. Take Care.

Oh nooo Fred. I'm sorry to hear this. I'm glad you are doing okay. Btw, is 811 a number to talk to a nurse? I've never heard of that one. Oh, I re-read your message and it seems that IS the nurse number eh? While I was in PEI was stung by a wasp right in the joint of my finger and it was swollen to 3 times its size and I phoned a nurse to get her advice. Chances are that was the number I called, but that was about 35 years ago.

Yes, I don't know if it's in every province, 811 but it is in N.S.
I had the last of the "steri-strips" off today and they itched a little bit. I was wondering if it was because of an infection around the incision sites, but now I think it was the adhesive that they used. Now that the strips are gone the itching is going away.

It must ave been a chronic condition that was bothering me for some years and finally came to a head. I feel much better with it gone. I've gained flexibility in the midsection. That feels good.

Hi Fred. I think being allergic to adhesive on bandages must be a common allergy, as I have that problem as well as did my mother. It's only certain adhesives so think it must be a certain chemical that we have reacted to. I have to have "tape" versus bandages which seems to be more hypo-allergenic.

Yes, it may have been something to do with the toxins in my gut from the Appendix infection. It's gradually going away now. I'm feeling much better.

I'm improving greatly. I kept getting rashes, on my back, on my face, and they itched badly. I know now it was chronic appendicitis. My blood was toxic. With the appendix gone, and healing, the rashes have disappeared. I feel younger & stronger and I'm walking without a cane. Two other things have helped also.

I saw a heart specialist and he told me my heart was fine. It was swelling, (fluid), in the lining of my lungs that was blocking the capillaries and making breathing difficult. I've been doing lung exercises and I can be much more active now. In addition, the doctor suggested a "low carbohydrate diet." It's like a Keto (?) diet, but with unspecified low levels of carbs. He says to do what's comfortable for me and see if it's effective. Wow! Do I feel so much better than I've felt for about 5 years. The first few days were ... well I won't describe it here, but now hat I'm re-adjusted to no carbs and lots of fats, (well, some fats), I am loosing weight beautifully and I even think of running again when I am outside. I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking about it... or possibly skating again :) :) :)

The change in just the past few weeks is something I wouldn't have believed, before. Wishing the same for all of you as well. It's like a new lease on life.

Hi Fred. I hope things continue to go well for you. I'd watch these high fat diet ideas and perhaps it would be wise to go see a dietitian for advice. Carbs also improve energy. My experience is some doctors are on these fad diet trends right now, but that does not mean it's good for your overall health. A balanced diet with reduced carbs, portion control and increase activity is another idea. Some of these things increase your cancer risk such as too much red meat...and lots of vegetables is always a good idea. Also, I'd look on the Heart & Stroke Foundation website where they recommend how much cholesterol per day. I looked it up once and I know that one egg per day probably won't hurt you, but two is already at your max for the day, unless of course you remove the yolks.

No problem Kitty. I have a genetic pre-disposition to good cholesterol. I can load up on butter, and eggs with yolks as much as I want. It won't hurt me as long as I keep my Carbs low.

2 inches off my waist as of last week. I feel great.

Well, don't go overboard or anything. ;) A good balance is always a good idea.

I got down to 3 inches off my waist and then levelled off. I don't know why, but things stopped working and I think I gained another inch back now. Something is not working. Maybe I'll try something else. In times past I'd just break out the bike and start riding, but I can't do that now, although I'd like to try, but in this room I have on the 3rd floor, I have no place to keep the bike.

Nice to know that Virtue & Moir have been honoured so. Maybe it should have been sooner after 2010, but there it is now. They've done so much for skating.

I think it is common for people's weight to plateau before they lose more. It's actually better if this happens as it's easier to keep the weight off. I'm not a big fan of rapid weight loss and all of a sudden someone is so much thinner in only a couple of months and seem to be their "ideal weight" (although they seem too skinny to me). I think it's a shock to the system. I maintain my weight extremely well, which can mean more healthy, but I have to chip away slowly. It's frustrating at times, but what can you do and that way I keep off the weight I've lost better. I guess we are all different and I think it's easier for men to lose weight than women overall. I certainly see this with my father.

I had the doctor weight mewhen I visted him a couple of weeks ago. I'm 277 lbs. with my shoes and pockets full of loonies & toonies. He estimated 275 with that data. I don't have scales at home so the data points will be few & far between I had a waist of 52 inches and it's now down to 49 and holding foir the past 2 months.
I know plateaus are natural in the weight loss world, but at this rate I'll be dead before I reach my goal. I've been on a plateau for the last 3 months. The diet has stopped working for me. I'll have to do something else.

Wow, 3 inches is a lot! It sounds like you've actually made tremendous progress!

Since then, I've plateaued. I'm still at 49, down from 52 originally. Following the same low carb. diet, but it's not working anymore. I'm going to start limiting portion sizes as well. I've got to get going on this.

I can't remember if we've discussed this before, but have you consulted a dietitian? They can give good hints as to how to keep your nutrition up and calories down. Another idea is Weight Watchers which seems to work for a lot of people. They give lots of good education. I know men do go to it as well sometimes.

Not Weight Watchers. They're no linked into a low carb diet. Anyway for the time being I'm just pleased that it's so much easier to tie my shoes. :) ;)

WOW!!! I got a wonderful apartment that is just about everything I wanted. I have one last hurdle to get through with a couple of friends, but we made an agreement and I'm hoping they'll live up to their part.
I am so happy I could bounce off the walls. :D :D :D

So Far so good. I have a friend who's brother has a truck. The new landlady & her husband say they are cleaning & painting and they will have the small bedroom ready first. I can put some boxes & stuff in there which would make moving day go more easily for me.

I've got to visit my storage area and see if my bike is still rideable. A little oil might be all it needs, or I could have to get it to the repair people and get a new chain & sprockets.

It's nice that Battle of the Blades is coming back. I hope they'll follow the old tradition of putting it up on the web site the following morning, so I can watch it too.

Take care, everybody. There's still some summer left, and I'll welcome the cooler weather. The heat has been hard on me. The new apt. is naturally cool, even in summer. Hmmm I wonder what the winter will be like.
