2022 Olympic TEAM EVENT - Beijing - Begins Feb. 3 Eastern Time

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

It appears that it will be Roman Sadovsky as Canada's entry in the Men's portion of the Team Event - Keegan Messing is not yet cleared to travel to Beijing :(
Canadian figure skater Keegan Messing's Olympics in limbo as he awaits negative COVID test results

Men's national champion remains in Canada days before competition begins

Canada's national champion in men's figure skating is at risk of missing the Winter Olympics.

CBC Sports has learned Keegan Messing is still in Canada and awaiting the necessary COVID testing results for travel to Beijing. All participants traveling to the Games are required to produce two negative PCR results before being able to board a flight.

"We are hopeful he will be able to travel soon. We will provide an update in the coming days," said Caroline Sharp, a spokesperson with the Canadian Olympic Committee

The 29-year-old, a dual Canadian-American citizen from Girdwood, Ak., captured his first national title in early January. It was expected he would be participate for Canada in the team event, which begins Thursday. The team lineup is expected to be announced Wednesday in Beijing.

The men's long program of the team event is slated for Monday, Feb. 7. Canada won gold in the team event four years ago in Pyeongchang.

Roman Sadovsky makes up the second half of Canada's men's figure skating team. The 22-year-old from Toronto placed second at nationals.

Based on the news conference by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) from Beijing today, it appears that Keegan will not be available for the team event but they are still hoping to be able to get him to Beijing for his individual event, even it if means arriving the night before!

They said that he is well and is training in Vancouver but it will depend on him getting the required two negative tests and the logistics of available flights as they are very limited. Fingers crossed for him!

There is a new "wrinkle" in relation to the team event with respect to the German pair:

From Jackie Wong:
Hase/Seegert out of Team Event due to Seegert testing positive for COVID on arrival (he’s in an isolation hotel) - they can compete in the individual event if he’s able to test negative twice
No word on whether Team GER takes 0s for pairs or if they can’t compete
Some applicable rules:

Competition begins tonight (ET).

The Start Orders/Results link is now active and the start orders and detailed time schedules are posted for the Team Event: https://results.isu.org/results/season2122/owg2022/

There are 10 teams competing however two teams have been hit by positive test results - UKR will have no man competing and GER will have no pair competing. That means they get 0 points for their segment of the SP (preliminary round) and reduces the likelihood of them moving into the final (free skate) round.

There will be individual scores posted but placements will contribute to the Team Standing results which will determine the 5 teams to proceed to the final found of this team event. https://results.isu.org/results/season2 ... C001RS.htm

The Olympic figure skating team event is scheduled to be part of the evening coverage on CBC this evening - I'm not sure how much of the live competition will be included. I believe there are also plans to have it available on CBC Gem.

If you have access to NBC TV they have also indicated that the skating will be part of their evening coverage tonight.

Although not all of the competitions have yet begun, there is more happening than skating

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of, that Roman would be near the beginning. I am planning to watch live streaming at the beginning before the skating coverage starts on TV at 9:30. There's about 40 minutes that won't be covered I guess, but who knows with other sports as well. I like quite a few sports including Moguls, but not really curling for some reason, HAHA.

GREAT!! Thanks so much Elizabeth! :) In my experience CBC Gem has a better picture quality, but I haven't tried live coverage on there before. We need like 3 TV's going to get all the coverage eh? haha

For those who haven't checked on things yet...

Current standings after the first three events of the preliminary round of the the team event:

1️⃣ USA
2️⃣ ROC

It will be up to Madeline Schizas, as she competes in the final SP on Saturday evening (ET) to get Canada into 5th place in order for the team to compete in the final round.

Here are the team members who have skated so far (note Piper's new costume for the RD):

Jackie Wong has posted about the Team Event so far and looks at what may happen next in the preliminary round toward qualifying for the final round - I have copied some of it below but the whole post is here: https://www.rockerskating.com/news/2022 ... gest-stage
How will the rest of the short programs shakeout?

The women’s entries are still not due yet, but from all indications - and we even heard it in the press conference from Katsalapov - Kamila Valieva will be the lead-off for Team ROC. With an almost certain win there, ROC will head into the free skate with some momentum. But where the US entry - either Mariah Bell or Karen Chen - finishes will also determine just how large that door opening is for the team gold upset. Team Japan will rely on the strength of either Wakaba Higuchi or Kaori Sakamoto to get themselves more in the mix - they are currently in fourth but will most certainly get back into the top three.

But also, the competition slims down to five teams after the short programs are done, so outside of those projected top three, two more teams qualify for the free and that’s where the intrigue is. China (21), Italy (18), Canada (16), and Georgia (15) are separated by six points, and lots can happen in the women’s short. The breakdown looks a little bit like this:

Canada and Georgia trail but have the edge. Madeline Schizas and Anastasiia Gubanova both have the potential to be in the top five in the women’s short, with a short program ceiling of somewhere around 68-72. The two are fairly evenly matched - and Canada and Georgia are currently separated by one point. China and Italy go into the women’s short programs knowing that they have hit their weak spot. Yi Zhu and Lara Naki Gutmann have short program ceilings in the low 60s, so they will need to be clean.

If Zhu can finish in the top eight, then Team China’s chances for the free skate go way up. Gutmann will need a huge score and probably a top six to give Italy a chance, and that seems unlikely given her season so far.

So omg tiebreakers?

Given the scenarios, there is a potential that a tiebreaker will decide which team goes into the free skate, so let’s take a look at what that means. The tiebreaker rules somewhat favor teams with very strong strong links over teams with consistent strength in all disciplines. Here are the tiebreakers in order of operation:

* Highest total team points from the two best places; if still tied, then:

* Highest total segment scores of the current segment of the two best places according to team points; if still tied, then:

* Highest total team points from the three best places; if still tied, then:

* Highest total segment scores of the current segment of the three best places according to team points

If still tied, then a tie will actually happen and all tied teams qualify for the final

I'm hoping that Madeline skates well and up to her previously demonstrated standard. If she does, Canada should be able to move up from 6th to 5th place and qualify for the final round.

Watch the Women's SP live on CBC Gem: https://gem.cbc.ca/live/1992339011721

It appears that it will be delayed on the CBC TV coverage - they just said it would be shown at 11 p.m. ET. Since NBC $$ was responsible for having the women skate in US primetime (ET), I'm sure it will be part of their evening coverage tonight.

For the top 5 teams, they begin competition with the Men's FS just before 11 p.m. ET this evening. The skaters will be put into a start order about an hour earlier, based on the standings after completion of the Women's SP.

In the practice for the pairs event there was an accidental collision between the Canadian and Italian teams while the Italians were doing their program run-through. Vanessa seems to have suffered the worst of the collision. Here's hoping she's OK for the competition :(

According to the schedule, the skating will also be part of this evening's CBC TV broadcast.
