US Nationals overlapping the year end - San Jose, CA

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

The ladies FS is already underway - there are 2 withdrawals, one of whom is Polina Edmunds, citing an injury issue related to her right foot :(
Sad to announce my withdrawal from the Freeskate. Due to shooting pain in my right foot, I cannot perform today. Very unfortunate timing, but I'm still very proud to have skated a strong SP for my hometown at US Champs 18.

TV coverage on NBC began at 8 p.m. EST - the first hour is replay of some of the SPs and "chit chat". Meanwhile, on the ice the Hall of Fame ceremony was taking place; resurfacing was being done, etc.

Just announced - Based on the selection criteria, the USFS selection committee has nominated the following men to the Olympic team: Nathan Chen, Adam Rippon & Vincent Zhou (in alphabetical order).

Alternates for the 2018 men’s Olympic Team have been named as Jason Brown (first alternate), Ross Miner (second alternate), and Max Aaron (third alternate).

As with the choices for the ladies, lots of controversy. Lots of "rationalizing" about the full range of criteria, not just the results at Nationals.

U.S. Figure Skating Announces Pairs Nomination for 2018 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team
(1/7/18) - U.S. Figure Skating announced today the pair who will compete at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 as part of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team.
The pairs team is Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim.

Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim are the 2018 U.S. champions. They won their first U.S. title in 2015, and are the only U.S. pair to compete a quadruple twist. In 2015, they were the first U.S. pair to qualify for the Grand Prix Final since 2007. Although they missed the 2016-17 season due to illness, they have earned the highest U.S. finish at each of their international assignments since their return to competition at the 2017 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.

Alternates for the 2018 Olympic Team have been named as Tarah Kayne and Danny O’Shea (first alternate), Deanna Stellato and Nathan Bartholomay (second alternate), and Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc (third alternate).

Scimeca-Knierim and Knierim join previously nominated athletes Bradie Tennell, Mirai Nagasu, Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Adam Rippon and Vincent Zhou on the 2018 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team.

U.S. Figure Skating will announce the ice dance athletes selected to compete at the Olympic Winter Games, along with the United States’ World, World Junior and Four Continents teams for ice dance at 8:55 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 7.

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games will take place Feb. 9-25, in PyeongChang, South Korea.

U.S. Figure Skating also confirmed that each member of the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team is eligible to compete in the Olympic team event. U.S. Figure Skating will work with athletes and their coaches to determine if the athlete will participate in the event.

Each team in the event will consist of one lady, one man, one pairs team and one ice dance team to be selected from athletes who have qualified in their individual disciplines. Each team, however, will be allowed to make up to two exchanges after the short program/dance. Selected athletes named to the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team will compete in their respective disciplines in the team event. The team event will consist of the 10 best national teams from NOCs/ISU members. The five teams with the highest number of points after the short program/dance will qualify for the free skate/dance. In the team event, athletes will receive points based on their finishes in each segment of competition.

All U.S. Olympic Team nominations are subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

Good Olympic team! I have to say that the controversy around the selection would be unlikely to happen in Canada. To whine and complain that you should have been chosen over someone else on the team, is extremely bad for team morale and in my mind shows lack of respect for your teammates. I guess the fangs come out before the Olympics. I remember when Jeff Buttle didn't make a championship selction whether this was the Olympics or Worlds I cannot recall, but although devastated he conducted himself with such class. Later he won the World Championship. Attidtude is everything and athletes, although human, have to learn how to lose as well as win...it's all part of the package.

I read somewhere else about the rationale of not selecting her in favour of Bradie who seems to be a better jumper albeit her artistry needs a lot of improvement. We'll see whether it was a good decision. I can understand how heartbroken Ashley must be.
