ISU 2019/20 Four Continents Championship - 4-9 Feb. 2020 - Seoul, KOR

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Although he was named to the 4CC team for Japan, Shoma Uno has declined the assignment in favour of preparing for the World Championships in his new training environment in Switzerland. His 4CC spot has been given to Kazuki Tomono.

The Japanese Federation has officially confirmed that Shoma's coach is now Stephane Lambiel.

The entries, by discipline, have now been updated with the USA entries: http://www.isuresults.com/events/fsevent03111955.htm

I sincerely hope that the ISU, the organizers, and the national federations have given thought to appropriate precautions in light of the spread of the "novel coronavirus" - there should be concern for the health of the skaters, coaches, judges, volunteers, etc. I believe there were some reported cases in South Korea already.

With the expanding travel bans, will most of the Chinese competitors (i.e. those who train in China) even be able to travel to Seoul?

Very good points Elizabeth. That's kind of scary to think of!

The skaters should be healthy enough to get through a bout of Corona Virus. It has only a 2.1 % mortality rate and those are usually people with weak immune systems, like children and the elderly. I think the main problem with that is if they carry the bug back here to Canada when they return home.

The real threat might be the one that follows it in China. The Bird flu virus has a 60% mortality rate, although no human cases have been reported as yet. All the birds in the effected area in China have been killed and disposed of.

Skaters and most skating fans know that this is not a time for laying blame on other races. We are too much of an international community for that. China is treating this very aggressively, which I think is exactly what they should be doing. There is no such thing as saving too many lives, or ending the viral outbreak too quickly.

As Always, my prayers go out to those involved in the mess. I hope everyone on the Board is warm and safe at this time of year, and enjoying the skating. I've started following the Toronto Raptors again. They are doing very well lately. It's a totally different sport and I don't understand all the rules, but I do like watching these guys perform. They are so good at what they do.

With respect to health concerns, IFS Magazine has posted this on Twitter:
The organizers of #4ContsFigure in South Korea are doing a great job of screening everyone - athletes, coaches, media and fans - before they enter the arena. Everyone has to fill out a questionnaire and have their temperature taken before entering the building.

Zoey accompanied her parents to Seoul. She even attended the draw ceremony. Will she appear in the Kiss 'n Cry there too?

On the live stream of the rhythm dance last night there was no commentary. On the stream for the pairs, we had periodic commentary (same man as for the Europeans) but, at least for the first part of it, if he wasn't speaking we heard nothing. It was a bit frustrating to see pairs skating and not to hear what they were skating to  A new interpretation of "sounds of silence"????

Fortunately, they realized that there was an issue and left his microphone open through the rest of the event. I actually could have done without his commentary which is not very "educated" but better that than no sound at all!!

The ladies SP is now done and the first day of competition is "history".

Coach Carol Lane has revealed a change from "butterscotch to merlot.....another colour, another mood" for Piper and Paul's Both Sides Now free dance.

Image

Anyone watching the live stream/videos may have commented on the echo-y sound. Piper says that they hear their music twice and it's "very, very strange"!! Coach Carol says: "Sounds twice as nice........not!"
