What does everyone remember about the 1994 US Nationals in Detroit? Is it that the pros were returning to amateur competition? Most likely it is "the whack", especially after the reminder from the movie "I, Tonya". This month the US Nationals return to Detroit.

This story provides memories of some of those who were there: https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2019/01/ ... aAfpN7rOMg

Oh yes, the memories! Life goes on and off we go into the National Championships and later the Worlds. Bring it on - hopefully only great performances.

That was certainly an awful moment. I'll never forget it (shudders). Hopefully this Detroit championship goes a lot better! Hopefully I can see some of it as well as Canadians.

And now the US championships is experiencing winter weather issues, especially for those trying to get there for the senior events.

The Detroit Metro Airport closed at 8 p.m. last evening and is now hoped to reopen at 10 a.m. - snow, freezing rain and ice caused icy runway conditions that they could not keep ahead of.

The senior competition begins tomorrow.

In the championship (senior) ladies short program last evening Alysa Liu, age 13, successfully landed a lovely triple axle and sits in second place.

NBC is showing some of the ladies free skate on TV this evening - at the moment they are doing a bit of a "rehash" of the top short programs while the early warmup group is skating their free skates.

I'm enjoying the coverage on NBC. I've been busy and not feeling too well lately so I totally forgot about it. I had fortunately set a reminder and so it came on automatically for me. Remember when we had to get up walk across the room and change the channel using the dial, and then we probably had to hit the side of the set to fix the picture tube? lol.

 Now this is funny!

Wow, so the mistake was across different platforms. Funny. I just got a real shock as Kaetlyn's name popped out at me!

I enjoyed the coverage this afternoon. These nationals have been quite emotional this year...good grief. I guess they always are, but it seems there's more heartbreak this year at both Nationals in North America.

The mistake obviously originated with NBC and all the platforms just picked it up :D

It's unfortunate that NBC is, as usual, ignoring the ice dance on the main network. Especially so since the top 3 teams all train in Canada!!

I'm grateful, however, that they are showing some highlights from Europeans tomorrow before they show the end of their US nationals coverage.

History was made in several ways at the US Nationals. One was the performances and victory of the youngest ladies senior champion, at age 13 Alysa Liu landed 3 triple axles - one in her SP and two in her FS.

Another one was in the ice dance event where the first openly gay couple, Karina Manta & Joseph Johnson, competed. Here is their innovative free dance which was choreographed by Christopher Dean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hs_EP_ts-Y

Manta & Johnson finished 6th in the free dance and 7th overall but were asked to perform their free dance again in the gala.
