2019 European Championships - 21-27 January 2019

This is where we discuss figure skating and skating related items. How did you favourite skaters perform, and so on? However we never speculate on the private lives of skaters, like who might be going out with whom, because that is poison and is not tolerated here. A good guideline is that if it's not publicly announced, in the papers etc. then it's probably best to leave it alone. Is it a gray area? Then write to me and ask.

Today's competition was completed with the pairs SP. The results: http://www.isuresults.com/results/seaso ... T003RS.HTM

After the short program in each discipline small medals are awarded to the top 3; there is a draw for skating position in the free skate; and then there is a press conference for the medalists. Here is the one for the pairs:

Results of the SP for the men: http://www.isuresults.com/results/seaso ... T001RS.HTM

The top 24 (of the 37 who started) qualify for the FS.

Protocols: http://www.isuresults.com/results/seaso ... Scores.pdf

Comment from Bev Smith (via Twitter) on Javi's quad sal being called UR:
Watching the event live, judges gave Javi Fernandez GOE of 3.40 for his quad Salchow. His UR mark was 7.28, Full marks would have been 13.10. SP mark would have been 97.66, about what Orser expected in K/C. Now he is a quad Salchow away from first, instead of 2.84 pts.
(She was watching the live stream.)

=======================

Pairs news (via Jackie Wong on Twitter):
Ziegler/Kiefer have been mourning the death of their coach, Jean François Ballester. That was why they were so emotional after the SP. They decided to withdraw from the FS to have more time to heal before Worlds, felt it was too soon for them to compete.
Start order for the pairs FS: http://www.isuresults.com/results/seaso ... SEG006.HTM

New world record set for FS score and total score in the pairs event.
  • Gold - Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres FRA - 225.66
  • Silver - Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov RUS - 218.82
  • Bronze - Aleksandra Boikova/Dmitrii Kozlovskii RUS - 205.28
Morgan Cipres & Vanessa James are only the 2nd French duo to win the Figure Skating Pairs event at the European Championships, after Pierre Brunet & Andrée Joly-Brunet in 1932.
